ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS -by Vatsal
What is it? Environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the importance of its protection. Promoting environmental awareness is an easy way to become an environmental agent and participate in creating a brighter future for our children. 2
Environmental awareness is an integral part of the movement’s success. By teaching our friends and family that the physical environment is fragile and indispensable, we can begin fixing the problems that threaten it. 3
Environmental Issues 4
Deforestation Millions of acres of forest are cut down for industrial benefit, such as large scale farming, oil mining, and the production of paper goods. Deforestation causes wildlife and biodiversity extinction because the loss of habitat threatens many species’ existence. 5
Production of Plastic Goods According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2010 alone 31 million tons of plastic waste was created. This waste ends up all over the globe in both land and water, a good example is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. 6 Currently our society creates a great deal of waste and much of that waste consists of plastic.
Global Warming Global warming is the long-term heating of Earth’s climate system due to human activities, primarily fossil fuel burning, which increases heat-trapping greenhouse gas levels in Earth’s atmosphere. 7
Some of the main reasons responsible for widespread Environmental Ignorance
A global study said last week that India lost nearly 2 million hectares of tree cover between 2001 and 2020, an overall decrease of nearly 5% tree cover since the year 2000. 11 Upliftment of cities over Forests

Students through education When it comes to raising awareness about environmental issues, a good place to start is by including lessons about the environment in school curriculums. All schools can learn something from the Eco-Schools Initiative. Here are some practical tips to get started: Teach children about the three Rs: reduce waste, reuse resources, and recycle materials. Organize tree planting days at school and teach children why trees are important to the environment. Encourage children to switch off all appliances and lights when not in use. Ensure taps are being closed properly after children have used them, and to use water sparingly. 13
Masses through Mass-Media Mass-media can play a vital role in creating peoples’ awareness about environment and conservation of natural resources. It can serve this purpose by means of its multi-channel regional and network service comprising programmers such as talks, interviews, plays and documentaries etc. The electronic media can identify and bring to a halt forces affecting the natural and even the man-made environment. It matters much how the public mind can be mobilized to reduce pollution and promote environmental quality. 14
Through Planners, Decision-Makers and Leaders Since this Elite section of the society plays the most important role in the shaping the future of the society, it is very important to give them the necessary orientation and training through specially organized workshop and training programmers. publication of environment related resources material in the form of pamphlets or booklets published by the Ministry of Environment and Forest can also help in keeping this session abreast of the latest developments in the field. 15
