EPD Creation & Verification

Product Category Rules (PCRs) Set of specific rule, requirements and guidelines for developing EPD for one or more product categories Developed separately for groups of similar products (ones for which the same functional unit can apply) PCR establishes system boundary (cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave) Specific set of environmental impact categories How to model the product system (e.g. functional unit, system boundaries) You must have PCR before you do EPD

Program Operators Program operators are responsible for supervising the EPD development process– from creating and maintaining PCRs to approving and publishing individual EPDs. The PCR are developed by these Program operators.

5 Steps of Getting an EPD:

Data Collection Outputs Products Air, Water and Solid Emissions Inputs Energy Raw Materials Manufacturing Data Transport Data End-of-life Data

Life Cycle Assessment: Defining Functional Unit Defining System boundary Cut-off rules Allocation rules Data quality requirements Environmental Performance indicators (EN15804)

Defining Functional Unit The functional unit is a quantifiable measure that defines the function of a product or system being assessed in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD). It specifies the reference unit against which the environmental impact will be measured. The functional unit should be well-defined, measurable, and representative of the product or system's intended purpose.

Definition of System Boundary Gate to Grave Creation into secondary Product Cradle to Grave Cradle to Gate Gate to Gate Cradle to Cradle

The cut-off criteria established by the EPD International is data for elementary flows to and from the product system contributing to a minimum of 99% of the declared environmental impacts shall be included The EPD must follow the Cut off rules prescribed under its respective PCR. Cut-off rules

Allocation Rules Allocation rules are used when multiple products or functions are produced from a single process or activity. They allocate the environmental impacts of the process or activity to each product or function. Allocation rules can be based on various principles such as mass, energy, economic value, or system expansion.

Data Quality Requirements Data quality requirements ensure that the data used in the LCA for an EPD is reliable, accurate, and representative. The data should be based on transparent and documented sources. Data quality requirements include considerations for data completeness, precision, reliability, and relevance.

Environmental Performance Indicators (EN15804) EN15804 is a standard that specifies the framework for assessing the environmental performance of construction products in EPDs. It defines a set of environmental performance indicators that measure the product's impact on various environmental categories. These indicators include global warming potential, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, ozone depletion potential, and others.

Background report The background report (known as an LCA report in the United States) is a vital accompaniment to your public EPD. It supports verification by providing further details about the relevant standards, LCA methodology and approach and any assumptions made

EPD report An EPD consist of, Product description Life cycle assessment data Required documentation, test certificate And other information as Recycled content List of substances of concern Energy efficiency performance Recommendations for installation, maintenance and end-of-life management

3 rd Party Verification: Every EPD needs to be verified by an independent third-party before it can be published. This ensures accuracy, reliability, and that the EPD conforms to the requirements of the relevant PCR.

Publication: Once your EPD has been verified by an independent third party, it is ready to be put into the public domain via publication. To do this, you need to submit the EPD document for publication to the program operator, who will process, register, and publish your EPD. There is usually a one-off fee for registering and publishing the EPD to the program operator .
