04-11-2016 MEE411 EPOXY RESINS 2 INTRODUCTION EPOXY RESINS- The resins which have at least two epoxy groups per molecule are known as epoxy resins EPOXIDE- An epoxide is a cyclic ether with a 3 atom ring. ETHER – R-O-R’ eg . CH₃-CH₂-O-CH₂-CH₃
04-11-2016 MEE411 EPOXY RESINS 4 RAW MATERIAL Bisphenol -A Epichlorohydrine Sodium hydroxide Methylisobutylketone The raw materials for epoxy resin production are largely petroleum derived, although some plant derived sources are now becoming commercially available (e.g. plant derived glycerol is used to make epichlorohydrin )
04-11-2016 MEE411 EPOXY RESINS 5 reaction mechanism Epoxy prepolymer formed from bisphenol –A and epichlorohydrin by step growth polymerisation STEP I --- Formation of low molecular weight prepolymer called diepoxy
04-11-2016 MEE411 EPOXY RESINS 6 The first thing that happens is that the NaOH does a little swap with the bisphenol A, to give the bisphenol A sodium salt:

04-11-2016 MEE411 EPOXY RESINS 16 First Stage R eaction (exothermic) -- Epoxy radical is separated from epichlorohydrine to be attached to hydroxyl radical, thus producing chlorohydrine ether . S econd Stage Reaction - the produced chlorohydrine ether causes a dechloration reaction to occur in the presence of NaOH , producing a terminal epoxy radical . The ether of bisphenol -A produced as a result continues to react with bisphenol -A and epichlorhydrine and gradually forms a high polymer. On completion of polymerization, the polymer is transferred through storage tank to the epichlorohydrine separation evaporator, where epichlorohydrine is separated under vacuum.
