Introduction to Pakistan Power System By Dr. Javed Ahmed Laghari Associate Professor Quaid-e- Awam University of Engineering Science & Technology, Nawabshah , Sindh, Pakistan Department of Electrical Engineering

Power System Generation Transmission Distribution

Generation 04 03 02 01 Hydro Power Plants Thermal Power Plants Nuclear Power Plants Renewable Energy Sources Bagasse is the residue obtained from crushing the sugarcane. It is used as a biofuel for the production of heat, and electricity. (Solar, Wind, & Bagasse)

Generation The IPPs consist of power plants which are owned by private companies. They usually sell the electricity to the government. Power Plants power plants owned by Independent Power Producers (IPPs) Power Plants Owned by Government

Generation The Renewable Energy resources based power plants are mostly owned by IPPs. They are controlled by National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) and National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) . All nuclear power plants are governed by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC ) . Government owned thermal power plants are divided into four generation companies called (GENCOs). They are controlled by Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) . The hydro power plants are installed, operated and maintained by Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) Power Wing .

Why Unit Price in Pakistan is Very High ? In Pakistan, per unit price of electricity is very high. One of the reason for this high per unit price is due to high share of thermal power plants in power generation. If the share of hydro and thermal plants may be reversed, then per unit price can be reduced significantly. It is because, hydro power plants produces cheaper electrical energy as compared to thermal power plants. Till today, per unit cost of electrical energy obtained through Mangla hydro power plant is 1.57 Pakistani rupees and Tarbela hydro power plant is 1.62 Pakistani rupees . Source: Power System Statistics, 43 rd Edition, NTDC On the other hand, per unit price of electrical energy from thermal power plant of Faisalabad is around 12.36 Pakistani rupees.
