BIO Erwin Chargaff was born on August 11, 1905 and died while living in New York on June 20 2002. He was an Austrian biochemist who immigrated to the United States during the Nazi era, and was a Professor of biochemistry at Columbia University medical school. Chargaff had one son, Thomas, with his wife Vera Broido, who he married in 1928. Chargaff became an American citizen in 1940 after being born in what is now the Ukraine.
Through careful experimentation, Chargaff discovered two rules that helped lead to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA.
