PHILOSOPHY Essentialism is an American philosophy of education which began in the 1930's and 1940’s. The two origins of essentialism is from idealism and realism. Essentialists refers to "Basic Education". Essentialists believe in teaching the basic subjects.
PHILOSOPHER WILLIAM BAGLEY (1874-1946) William Bagley introduced the philosophy of essentialism in education in the 1930’s. William Bagley was an American philosopher.
DEFINITION: There is essential knowledge that everyone in a given culture must have in order to be a knowledgeable and fully participating member of that culture. Essentialism is a belief that some thing is necessary . Essentialism is a philosophical concepts that relates to the idea of ‘essence’ suggesting everyone and everything has a definable set of a attributes essential to it’s identity.
ESSENTIALISM IN NURSING IMPLICATION Essentialism is educational theory an educational philosophy whose followers believe that students learn tradition basic subject thoroughly. Essentialists hope that when students leaves school , they posses not only basic skills and as extensive body of knowledge but also disciplined, practical minds, capable of applying school house lessons in real world. Essentialism can lead nurse to stereotypes their patients. As clinical practices believe about group instead of individuals.
BELIEFS- Essentialists tries to instil all students with most basic knowledge, skills and character development. Essentialists believe that students should be taught to be model citizens. Essentialists believe that teacher should be taught be a model citizens.
BELIEFS- Essentialists believe in mastery training. Essentialist believe that teacher should try to embed traditional moral values and virtues such as authority, preservence , consideration for others and practically and intellectual knowledge that needs students need to become model citizens.
PRINCIPLE The essentialism having four principles 1-Learning is a process of hard work insist on the importance of discipline and focus on more distant goals. 2-The initiative in education should take by the teacher rather than pupil. 3-It is largely by the social environment and man's that which determines how he shall live. 4The school should keep the methods of mental discipline by the problem solving.
CURRICULUM Strong emphasis on basic skills in elementary schools and disciplined knowledge and scholastic achievement in secondary school. There should be a common core curriculum that is taught to all students. Essentialism believe that the core knowledge could change.
WHY DO THE SCHOOL NEEDS ESSENTIALISM IN EDUCATION SYSTEM? For the students to acquire basic knowledge, skills and values. To hopefully transmit the traditional moral values and intellectual knowledge that student need to become model citizens.
PURPOSE OF SCHOOLING- 1.Prepare students to be productive contribute member of society. 2. For essentialist, the aim of education is to teach the young the essentials they need to live well in the /modern world. 3. Essentialist teach the basic subjects .
