The Online Exhibit on “Corky Gonzales: Always Fighting” By: Malorie Turner-HUMA 1305

Known as “the first” of the Chicano Movement Description: Illustrates Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales, a man known for being a boxer, poet, and activist. The picture is of Corky while at the Raza Unida Event and was created by Oscar Castillo and was created in El Paso, TX. Analysis: Alongside a picture that captures his image as an activist, Corky can be seen wearing an armband to which he wore to demonstrate his fighting spirit for the injuste actions done to Chicanos. Interpretation: The armband shows Corky’s dedication, he was so just about his cause that he wore this to further show his commitment to creating change Evaluation: Great description, followed by the picture that conveys Corky’s essence.

Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Description: A portrait of Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales, no real credited information alongside picture but does provide detail of Corky’s life. Analysis: The portrait of Corky shows him having a meaningful look on his face centering on his profound presence . Interpretation : Corky looks to be deep in thought Evaluation: The plain dark background helps make Corky the focal point, the attention solely on him.

Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales as a Teenager Description: Corky Gonzales as a teenager, his brother Art Gonzales describes Corky as being a talkative person who seen himself as an organizer at a young age. Analysis: The photo captures Corky at a young age, before he became the man he was known as. Interpretation: To me this picture portrays that of a normal happy civilian. Evaluation: A spirited young man, who looks to be happy which we can infer was a reason to why Corky pressed for others to be happy in the future.

Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Boxing Portrait Description: Corky Gonzales during his boxing career Analysis: This exhibit repeatedly highlights the fact that Corky was a boxer maybe to tie to his fighting spirit as a Chicano activist. Interpretation : Corky’s stance exemplifies his power Evaluation: This photo works well to convey Gonzales as a fighter, It speaks volume for those who know just how hard of a fighter he was not just as a boxer but an activist as well.

Gonzales Wedding Portrait Description: Photograph of Rodolfo and Geri Gonzales on their wedding day but again lack of credited information attached. Analysis: The photo captures the look of a happy couple Interpretation: This picture holds a great deal of love, a young couple on a momentous day such as their wedding day. Evaluation: Lovely photo, great way to show Corky’s love and display that a man such as himself was able to find love.

Gonzales Family Description : A family photo of Geri and Corky Gonzales alongside their three daughters, this photo was taken in 1950. Analysis: The picture along with the caption emphasis just how important family was to him. Interpretation : Love can be seen within this photo, and how being surrounded by those you love makes wholesome moments. Evaluation: I see this being a genuine moment that depicts his family in a loving way, and shows the type of man Corky was.

Description: Newspaper advertisement for “Corky’s Corner ” grand opening, it was a sports bar established by Corky Gonzales and was the first one in Denver Colorado. Analysis: Newspaper clipping providing information on the establishment/ the man responsible for creating it. Interpretation : Reminded me of our newspaper chapter and how this led to a form of entertainment. Evaluation: This advertisement clipping from the paper looks aged that being so its engaging.

Vote Corky Gonzales Description: This photo is about Gonzales interest in politics specifically the Democratic party. Analysis: I want to highlight how outgoing and involved Corky was and how this can be seen at a young age. Interpretation: I tie this to voting in general how we as the people have the power to create change we just have to participate. Evaluation: I see this as Corky’s attempt to inflict a different type of change.

Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales with Open Palms Description: A photo of Rodolfo Gonzales, attached to a caption that exemplifies Gonzales frustration while fighting discrimination/ racism . Analysis: I notice that this exhibit chose photos that provide the viewers with an opportunity to infer the emotions Gonzales felt in that moment. Interpretation: : This photo does hold meaning it looks to be as if Corky had a lot of compassion towards the topic at hand. Evaluation: I see this being a success because the exhibit chose a great photo to correspond with the caption in order to get people to understand how he felt at that moment.

“I am Joaquin” Cover Description: Created in 1967, a poem focusing on Chicano identity was written by Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales. Analysis: This poem was considered to be a turning point for the Chicano Movement, allowing others to feel and understand Cork y’s point of view. Interpretation: The poems cover displays Corky with a stern look focusing on his attempt to have readers review his serious topic. Evaluation: This was considered a success because Corky’s words were able to aid the Chicano Movement.

“I Am Joaquin ” Inside Context Description: The I Am Joaquin Poem context, created in 1967, the museum had both Rudy and NIta ( Corky Gonzales daughters) Speak on the matter. Analysis: The illustration beside the poem of hte man and woman standing together further conveys Chicano pride and action. Interpretation : I think the choice of not including eyes helps display the tragic injuste Chicanos felt. Evaluation : All together the poem and picture correlate well in describing suffering

Chicano Flag Description: This Chicano flag was owned by the Gonzales family. The colors of the flag are that of the Mexican flag with three bold faces amongst the middle. Analysis: I believe this work was created to further drive the Chicano Movement and display pride. Interpretation: The middle face reminds me of the stern look Corky makes on the cover of his poem “I Am Joaquin” showing a sense of seriousness Evaluation: I see this as a representation being a successful display of how strong the Chicano’s are when fighting for their cause.

Poor People’s Campaign Description: Washington, D.C. in 1968 Corky Gonzales during the Poor people’s Campaign, holding hands with his son Rudy. Analysis: Something you may notice throughout the exhibit is how Corky is always the man in the center, the leader, and who can be seen as the one others look up to. Interpretation : This photo exhibits the motivation Chicanos had when working toward their juste cause of fighting for their rights. Evaluation: The exhibit touches on how Corky was not only seen as a man who fought for Chicano rights but how he was compassionate about human rights in general, when looking at this exhibit would you say this photo displays that of all races?

Escuela Tlatelolco shirt Description: This shirt translates to “Teaching students… liberating minds.” a shirt established from the Escuela Tlatelolco school. To further unify Chicano youth. Analysis: This picture to me does not exemplify the same as pictures before it, while its cause is noble and just the picture itself lacks volume. Interpretation : I would describe this picture as unmoving, it comes off as something added for filler rather than a more interesting photo being used to tie to the Chicano Youth Conference of 1969. Evaluation: I see this as a failure in terms to the exhibit not proving a more interesting photo to correlate with the caption.

Denver Youth Conference Demonstration Description: The denver Youth Conference Demonstration, date created (1969-03). This is a piece from the La Raza Photograph Collection. Analysis: As previously stated throughout this exbiti whether Corky is standing alone or amongst others he can still be seen as a focal point, a man in the center. Interpretation: The picture expresses “strength in numbers” the amount of people who are present to show their same concern on the matters at hand. Evaluation: I view this as successfully presenting how important this conference was by providing the viewer with a great photo of the crowd.

Anti-Vietnam War Protest Description: Gonzales seen working alongside other activist, contributing at supporting all. Analysis: This shows viewers the type of person Corky was a man who cared for everyone's rights as well for any cause he sought as a just one. Interpretation : This reminds me of when MArtin Luther king would have fellow citizens alongside him fighting for what was right. Evaluation: I see this working together in a successful way because the caption and the photo display that of a man who was for the people.

United Farm Workers Event Description: The photo was of the United Farm Workers Event, taken in 1970 by Manuel Garza Barrera Jr. and was located at Coachella, CA. Another piece from the La Raza Photograph Collection. Analysis: Unlike other protest or causes in this one Corky can be seen holding his fellow Chicanos hands possibly to show they are united and standing as one. Interpretation : The position of their bodies displays just how meaningful this is to them. Evaluation : I see this as another great representation of Corky Gonzales and how committed he was.

Caesar Chavez Leadership Hall of Fame Award (2004) Description : An award created in 2004 Recognition goes to Corky Gonzales for his leadership and activism. Analysis: I’d like to point out how this picture unlike the shirt picture gives a better idea of how much Corky changed lives for the better. Interpretation : This displays a great deal of character and proves that his actions made a difference and are remembered. Evaluation: This is a successful image at projecting just how accomplished Corky was.

Rodolfo “Corky” Gonzales Portrait Description: A photo of Corky Gonzales taken in 1999 Analysis: This photo shows a man who has lived his life, and with his age brought about change. Interpretation : I like how the exhibit ends with an older photo of Corky followed by his daughter Nita Gonzales speaking words from his poem to further commemorate her father. Evaluation: This was the icing on the cake, it really resonated with me and almost gave us as the viewer a final chapter moment.
