About This Presentation

As we celebrated 25th anniversary of WWW last year I put together a few major events that made the web what it's today- a platform used by over 3 billion people worldwide. This is the evolution of the World Wide Web in a few short slides.

To celebrate the 25 th anniversary, this short story of the World Wide Web (WWW) highlights some of the most important and meaningful events that have made the web what it is today: A Platform Used by 2,802,478,934* People Worldwide ! *as of 10 th December 2014

What made the internet p ossible? The ability to connect individual files on the web through browsers and hyperlinks.

The World Wide Web On the left is our timeline starting in 1989. Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first browser called “ WorldWideWeb ”, (later renamed to Nexus   to avoid confusion between the software   and the World Wide Web). It used ‘hyperlinks’ through which people could ‘navigate’ from one document to another. Who was t he Web for? Users owing a desktop

Web 1.0 began to develop From now, information become more interconnected, websites started growing in popularity, the web opened to business and the public. 1989 References Web 1.0 The term was coined in 1999 by Darcy Di Nucci and was popularized by  Tim O'Reilly  at the  O'Reilly Media

Marketing adopts d igital t rends The first company to adopt a marketing strategy to utilise the internet was Apple in 1987. To regulate the Web, Sir Tim Berners-Lee founded the   World Wide Web Consortium. W3C gives technical support and guidelines that aims to maximise consensus about the web content and to ensure high standards. Yahoo was launched Yahoo! Inc., one of the most important multinational Internet corporations, was launched by Jerry Yang and David Filo in Sunnyvale, California. This is what Yahoo! Amazon was launched Amazon, one of the most important e- commerce websites was founded by Jeff Bezos, where everyone could sell products. 1996 Google came to be Google, the most popular search engine in the West,  began in January 1996 as a research project by Larry Page and Sergey Brin when they were both PhD students at Stanford University in Stanford, California. Baidu was launched Baidu , the most popular search engine in Asia, was founded on 18 th of January 2000 , by Robin Li. This it is what the Chinese web services company looked like in 2000. 2000

Web was on mobile… Ericsson R380  was a GSM (Global S ystem for Mobile) mobile phone   made by   Ericsson Mobile Communications and was the first device marketed as a " smartphone“. The device was capable of connecting to the Web. 2000

Wikipedia was launched One of the first websites that allowed people to have a more interactive relationship with the Web. The free-access/free content Internet encyclopaedia is supported and hosted by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Myspace was launched One of the first social media platforms and one of the main contributors to the evolution of the Web was Myspace. The   social network service,  with strong music emphasis was founded by Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe . WST was l aunched To further support the growing digital phenomena, Tim Berners-Lee and colleagues started the  Web Science Trust   ( WST ). WST is a charitable body with the aim of supporting the global development of Web Science. 2005 References webscience.me

SEO became a web p ractice SEO started emerging as a practice of optimising information for search engines. Dr .
