Slide Content

The biological process involved in the
removal of the harmful nitrogenous
materials is called Excretion
Many unicellular organisms remove
these waste by simple diffusion
Multicellular organisms need
specialized organs to perform this
function

Excretion in human beings
•The excretory system includes
•1. A pair of Kidneys
•2. A pair of Ureter
•3. Urinary bladder
•4. Urethra

Urinary System
Renal artery
Kidney
Ureter
Urinary Bladder
Renal Vein
For
sphincters,
see next slide

Structure of the Excretory system
•Kidneys are located in the
abdomen on either side of
the back bone
•Each kidney has many
Nephrons
•Urine which is produced in
the kidneys passes through
the ureters into the urinary
bladder
•It is stored in the bladder until
it is released through the
Urethra

Structure of the Nephron
•It has 3 parts
•1. Renal capsule
•2. Renal tubule
•3. Collecting duct

RENAL CAPSULE
•It has
•1. Bowmans capsule
•2. Glomerulus
•Bowmans capsule is the cup
shaped end of the nephron that
collects the filtered urine
•Glomerulus is a cluster of very
thin walled capalliries
•Glomerulus is associated with
the Bowmans capsule

Renal tubule
•It has three parts
•1. Proximal
convoluted tubule
•2. Henleys loop
•3. Distal
convoluted tubule

Process of urine formation

Factors on which amount of water
reabsorption depends
•1. How much
excess water there
is in the body
•2. How much
dissolved waste
there is to be
excreted

Excretion in plants
•1. Plants excrete excess water by transpiration
•2. oxygen which is thought to be waste product
generated during the photosynthesis comes out
through the stomata
•3. Waste products may be stored in leaves that fall off
•4. Many plant waste products are stored in vacuoles
they excrete some waste products into the soil around
them
•5. Some waste products are stored as resins & gums
in old xylem
•6. Most of the waste products are stored within the
dead tissues which are removed periodically
