Example: Anxiety During a
Public Presentation
Janaína Rosa
Introduction
Recently, I had the opportunity to observe how anxiety can affect a person’s performance during a public
presentation. My friend, John, who is an engineering student, had to present his final project to a large
audience. He was visibly nervous before and during the presentation. I decided to analyze this situation in
terms of neurobiology to better understand the processes involved.
Identification of Active Parts of the Nervous
System
During John’s presentation, several parts of the nervous system were active:
Central Nervous System (CNS): John’s brain was processing information, formulating responses, and
regulating emotions.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): John’s sympathetic system was activated in response to stress, increasing
his heart rate and respiration.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): Peripheral nerves were transmitting signals between the brain and the
body, such as the “fight or flight” response.
Apparent and/or Impaired Functions of the Nervous
System
Apparent Functions:
Cognitive Processing: John’s brain was evaluating questions, formulating responses, and recalling important
information.
Emotional Regulation: John’s limbic system was managing emotions like anxiety and confidence.
Physiological Responses: The sympathetic system increased adrenaline, preparing John’s body for the
stressful situation.
Impaired Functions:
Working Memory: Stress impaired John’s ability to remember recent information.
Decision Making: Anxiety made it difficult to make quick and effective decisions.
Emotional Control: Excessive stress led to exaggerated or inadequate emotional responses.
Detailed Analysis Based on the Course
This course provided a deeper understanding of how the nervous system responds to stress. For example:
Neurotransmitters: We learned that neurotransmitters like adrenaline and cortisol are released in stressful
situations, affecting mood and cognition.
Neural Plasticity: The course highlighted how repeated stress experiences can lead to lasting changes in the
brain, affecting resilience and future stress responses.
Regulation Techniques: Techniques such as deep breathing and meditation can help regulate the nervous
system’s response to stress, something that can be applied before and during a public presentation.
Conclusion
Observing John during his public presentation allowed me to apply the knowledge gained in the neurobiology
course. I gained a better understanding of how stress and anxiety affect the nervous system and how
regulation techniques can be helpful. This course taught me to better understand others’ suffering and help
them cope with their difficulties more effectively.
