External Exam Preparation 2024

Good News Stories – averages In most subjects, the average is greater than 50%. This, combined with the current internal, bodes well. The average across all subjects was 59.32% In most subjects, students finished the paper. Planning and perusal time used more effectively than previous years. What Now? Look for incremental growth driven by close attention to question cues and the marking scheme. Work with your teacher to understand your feedback so that you know specifically what YOU need to target in each subject. Focus on the Assessment Objectives which attract the highest marks. Focus on subject matter in the Syllabus. Use the subject matter as a checklist for what you need to know. This is what is assessed.

Don’t assume In most instances we don’t have enough divergence between the fifth and the sixth subject to clearly know which subjects count for the top 5 and which don’t. It would be dangerous to assume that a subject isn’t going to count, particularly if you have a 50% examination (or a series of 50% examinations). Prioritise yes, but don’t use the language of ‘this doesn’t or won’t count’.

Term 4 This term, be focussed and ready with a clear understanding of what you are aiming to achieve. Skills and concepts have been taught, so now it is up to you to seek feedback on renewed attempts to respond to feedback. Partner with your teachers. You will receive an EA schedule and a Targeted Tutorial schedule in the coming days. It will also be available in MyMtA ‘Academic’ tile so that you have advanced notice of the dates. Support Sessions during Swat Vac (16/10 – 18/10) and EA period Protocols to be observed: Students must be in full school uniform Students must be prompt to all support sessions they seek to attend Students must sign – attendance registers will be kept Students must not upload College resources to social media forums Unless the teacher advises otherwise, support sessions should be driven by clarification of student questions.

Protocols to be observed Be on time – better still: BE EARLY All students must be lined up in alphabetical order, outside the examination room, no later than 20 minutes prior to the start time. No student who has an examination scheduled for Session One and Two, is permitted to leave school grounds in between sessions. Food can continue to be purchased from La Cucina. Be in full school uniform Be prepared with all your correct equipment NO talking once you enter the exam room NO sharing of equipment NO distracting others in the exam room Only allowed equipment may be brought into the exam room NO touching or reading of exam papers until told to do so

Approved Items Prohibited Items Student ID cards Stationary items in a transparent case (which could be a plastic sleeve or zip lock bag). Items include: Black and blue pens 2B pencils, sharpener and eraser Note: 2B pencil is only required for multiple choice questions and drawing graphs or diagrams. Black or blue non-erasable pens must be used for all other written responses Sharpener Eraser Highlighters — students should not highlight their responses but may highlight stimulus or questions when permitted by the supervisor Clear plastic rulers Water in a clear unlabelled bottle (placed on floor) Approved medication – e.g. inhalers, placed on the desk, where visible to a supervisor. QCAA approved calculators   Dictionaries (except in some language subjects) Food and drink (other than water or for students with approved AARA) Mobile phones Apple watches (or smart watches of any kind) Erasable pens Blank paper, notes, any, any printed or written material Tissues – these are provided by venue Any item not on the approved list Lip gloss is NOT permitted !

Calculators Only calculators approved for use in assessments are permitted. Scientific and graphics calculators must: meet the requirements set out in the Scientific calculator list and Graphics calculator list be handheld and solar or battery powered be cleared of memory before entering the assessment room. For assessments that permit the use of a non-programmable calculator (Accounting, Economics, Geography, Legal Studies), the calculator must be handheld and solar or battery powered. It should be able to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square roots and powers. It must not allow access to a computer algebra system (CAS), spellchecker, dictionary, thesaurus or translator. Examinations with Audio or Audio Visual Components Music and Music Extension, and Languages require students to work from a laptop device. In these subjects, students MUST also use their own wired earphones / headphones, which cannot be Bluetooth, wireless, noise cancelling or have a microphone. The College laptops being used for the external exams require an aux circle jack. A rehearsal session will take place soon. You will receive clear instructions on the day.

What do I do if I forget my equipment? Borrowing of equipment in examinations in not permitted. Students must be responsible for bringing their own equipment (as detailed on the equipment list) for each examination.

What do I do if I am unwell on the morning of the exam? 1. Email Mrs Mansfield and Ms Little to advise 2. Make a medical appointment for that day to obtain a doctor’s report which explicit states you were suffering from a condition which incapacitated you on the day. The report must include the following details: the illness, condition or event (including details of a diagnosis, where applicable) date of diagnosis, onset or occurrence treatment or course of action related to the condition or event explanation of the probable effect of the illness, condition or event on the student’s participation in the assessment. Illness and misadventure applications for non-medical reasons, require written evidence from a relevant independent professional or other independent third party, such as a social worker, member of the clergy, police officer, solicitor or funeral director. 3. Send the medical certificate immediately to Mrs Mansfield and Ms Little

What do I do if I become ill in the exam? If you make a judgement that your illness is too severe to continue (not mild), you should: Contact a supervisor immediately. The supervisor will in turn, contact the EAC (prior to the first 30 minutes of the test) Make this call sooner rather than later – don’t persevere if you feel too unwell to finish. Leave the venue to see a doctor to obtain a medical report, which should be forwarded ASAP to Mrs Mansfield or Ms Little

No catastrophising – Can Do Quiet is needed outside exams (before and after) Students work for the length of exam Urgency rather than franticness – this is something we need to work on Students try for all questions – put down formula, put down dot points, put down definitions (all of these might attract marks) Relentless checking at the end of the paper – no resting – it’s contagious and it effects your results and our academic culture On track exam behaviours

Misconduct is… Unauthorised use of mobile phone Possession of notes Communicating with other another student Writing in the response book during perusal or planning time Using a calculator in perusal or planning time Cheating or attempting to cheat Intentionally causing disruption

Please grant me wisdom and discernment over this assessment period. H elp me to prioritise my tasks intentionally and focus wholeheartedly on what needs to be accomplished. Flexible Learning First two weeks in Term 4 Students who have EHS, RE, FSK, Certificate III in Business, Diploma of Business or study lesson in Period 1 (or Period 1&2 where it is a double) or Period 5 have the option to access a flexible study option and be off-campus for these lessons. If a student is ‘on site’ for a class that has been deemed ‘flexible’, they will be required to sign in at Student Services and attend the Futures Hub (A101) so that the College has a record of their attendance. Students arriving for period 2 or during first break for a timetabled class do not need to sign in at Student Services as class rolls will be marked . Students leaving during second break because they have a ‘ flexible ’ class in period 5 must sign out at Student Services. Students are required to be in attendance in all classes where assessment is ongoing. Making decisions to miss these classes in order to avoid inconvenience, is not acceptable. This includes Applied subjects where IA4 is still to be completed, Certificate III in Fitness, Certificate III in Hospitality, Certificate IV in Justice Studies and all General subjects for external exam preparation.
