Efficiency of workers while working in establishment depends upon - working hours Leave with workers Special relief Efficiency of workers while working in factories depends upon working hours because they feel satisfaction if working hours are prescribed. But on the other hand workers feel dissatisfaction if they perform continuous work for long time. To avoid these strategic conditions, the factories Act 1948 was enacted with certain provisions on this matter.

SECTIONS There are sixteen sections in this chapter (51 to 66)

SECTION 51- WEEKLY HOURS No adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in a factory for more than forty-eight hours in any week. But if the factory manager is interested to talk work after 48 hr. then first he has to take permission in written from the chief inspector of factories.

SECTION 52- WEEKLY HOLYDAYS No adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in a factory on first day of the week.

Section 53- Compensatory holidays If a worker is deprived of the weekly holiday He will be allowed a compensatory leave within the month in which the holidays were due to him, or within 2 months immediately following that month if he has not availed holidays during that month.

SECTION 54- Daily hours Adulate worker can’t allowed to work for more than 9 hours a day in a factory. But the worker hours can be extended to give facility in the change of shift, with the permission of chief inspector of factory.

SECTION 55- interval rest Worker can not be allowed to continue to work in a factory for more than 5 hours a day, without availing half interval for rest . But this period can be extended up to 6 hours a day by chief inspector of factories in writing as a special cases in the factory.

Section 56- spread over Workers will not be allowed to work for more ten & half hr. per day including interval for rest . But the same limit may be extended up to 12 hr. per day as special case by chief inspector of factories in writing.

Section 57- night shift Where a worker works in a factory on a shift which extends beyond mid night will be treated as a holiday for a whole day, i.e. the period of 24 consecutive hr., these will being when his shift ends.

Section 58- prohibit of overlapping of shift In any factory work cannot be carried on by means of system of shifts in a way that more than one way of workers is engaged in work of the same time. State government may empty any exempt any category of workers from this provision.

Section 59- extra wages for over time Worker can not be forced to do over time for more than 9 hours a day or more than 48 hours in a week. Workers will received double o the normal wages if he works in a factory for more than 9 hours a day or 48 hours in a week.

Section 60- restriction on double employment Adult worker can not be employed an any factory on any day if he has already been working in any other factory. But worker may be allowed for double employment with a prior permission of state government.

Section 61- notice of period of adult worker For adult worker , notice of the period of worker is essential to be displayed clearly on the notice board of the factory. The advance information of fixing of period by manager of the factory is necessary , if agrees to work in a particular period.

Section 62-Register of adult workers No adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in any factory without these information- (a) the name of each adult worker in the factory; (b) the nature of his work; (c) the group, if any, in which he is included; (d) where his group works on shift, the relay to which he is allotted; and (e) such other particulars as may be prescribed:

Section 63- hours of correspond with notice under section 61 and register under 62 No adult worker shall be required or allowed to work in any factory otherwise than in accordance with the notice of periods of work for adults displayed in the factory . and the entries made beforehand against his name in the register of adult workers of the factory.

Section 64-Power to make exempting rule the total number of hours of work in any day shall not exceed ten; the spread over, inclusive of intervals for rest, shall not exceed twelve hours in any one day; the total number of hours of work in a week including overtime, shall not exceed sixty; the total number of hours of overtime shall not exceed fifty for any one quarter.

Section 65-Power to make exemption orders state Government can modify the previsions relating to the notice period of work for adults. state government may also exempt adult workers from weekly hours, weekly holidays and daily hours to factory or factories to deal with an exceptional pressure of work, subject to the limitation in respect of working hours for adults.

Section 66- Restriction on employment of women Women will not be allowed to work in any factory except between the hours 6 am to 7 pm. Women workers are not allowed to work in any factory for more than 9 hours a day. Relaxation in this rule is effective for a maximum period of 3 years at a time.
