FAILURE AND SAFETY ASPECTS
ON EARTHEN DAM
DIVYA VISHNOI
ASSISTANT PROFESSOR
Embankment Dam
•The embankment dams are classified as non
rigid type of dam. For the construction of
these dam the entire range of soils from clays
to boulders or quarried stones are used.
•These dam usually provided the most
economically and most satisfactory solutions
for site at which suitable foundation at
reasonable depth may not be available for a
dam of concrete and masonry.
Types of Embankment dam
•Earth dam
•Rock filled dam
•Composite earth and rock filled dam.
4) Foundation slide
5) Failure by spreading
6) Failure by earth quack
7)Slope protection failure
8) Damage due to soluble minerals
Failure by Earthquake
•Cracks may develop in the core wall, causing leakages and
piping failure.
•Slow waves may set up due to shaking of reservoir
bottom, and dam may fail due to overtopping
•Settlement of dam which may reduce freeboard causing
failure by overtopping
•Sliding of natural hills causing damage to dam and its
appurtenant structures
•Fault movement in the dam site reducing reservoir
capacity and causing overtopping.
•Shear slide of dam
•The sand below foundation may liquefy
•Failure of slope pitching.
RTU QUESTIONS
•What are the causes of failure of Earthen dam?
Explain.
•Write the short notes on following:
Force acting on gravity dam
Use of flow net
Piping failure
Seepage failure on earthen dam
Instrumentation in gravity dam
Slope stability analysis in dam
RTU QUESTIONS
•Describe Phreatic line, flow net and use of
flow net.
•Describe piping and the methods of
prevention of piping?
•Explain the process of carrying out stability
analysis of earthen dam.
