Plaster Of Paris (P.O.P.)
Advantages. A smooth, uniform finish. The surface can be recovered or painted. E asy to construct and maintain. The ceiling are really light.
Facts about POP. Plaster of Paris a type of ceiling that originated from France. It’s a mixture of calcined gypsum (calcium sulfate dehydrate), sand and water. When these ingredients are mixed together and the subsequent paste is allowed to dry, it hardens and forms a tough coating.
Facts about POP. As tough as POP is when dry, it is still soft to be sanded and carved. Used majorly to create decorative molding. POP hardens instantly when water is added to it. It is applied to form fiber board or a wood base, which is then suspended from the ceiling.
Preparation of POP sheets. Size - 600x600x12 mm.
Materials Framework members’ materials. Aluminum channels, Mild steel channels, Wooden runners. Stainless steel coated screws should be used.
L-angle. This is important part. Provides support to false ceiling members. It totally depends on design. Weight and size of the material used. They are fixed at the places of joineries to support the members bond. L L-Angle attaching wall and false ceiling L-Angle attaching suspender to True ceiling.
Installation. Fixing the framework directly on the beams and structural ceiling. Fixing the wall supports and angle supports. Fixing the suspended framework on the supporting members. Fixing of POP boards.
Installation. Applying insulation. Finishing the joints. Edging profile. Fixing the moldings and decorative motifs. Final finishing with paints for desired effects.
POP Sheets. POP Patti Rates.
Comparison. POP Cheaper but difficult installation. Board size 2’ x 3’ Requires more framework . More joints. Heavier than gypsum. More possibility of cracking. Harder to work. More messy. Less strength . Shorter life span. Gypsum Costlier but easy installation. Board size 3’ x 6’ Less framework required. Lesser joints required. Lighter than POP. Less possibilities of cracking. Easy to work. No mess is created. More stronger than POP. Long lasting.
Glass
Glass U sual transparent glass is never used, as it contradicts the very idea of a false ceiling - to hide from the viewer's eye any defects and irregularities and other services wiring , plumbing, air conditioning systems , etc. F rosted glass is mostly used other than back painted, stained glass, mirrors , etc.
Mirror Ceiling.
Advantages. Creates the illusion of depth, it makes the room visually higher. R esist moisture and temperature fluctuations. Easy to clean and maintain. Suspended glass ceiling with stained-glass panels can be decorated with the image or using the ink-jet printing on special equipment, or a sticker on top of the glass transparent film with a pattern.
Disadvantages . Hard and brittle to cut, drill and work with. Suspended glass ceilings are quite heavy compared to other ceiling materials. Most dangerous if any glass tile breaks during repair works. Not advisable in earthquake prone areas.
Floating / Cloud Effect.
Other Methods
Acrylic glass Ceiling
Acrylic glass Ceiling Best alternative for Glass ceilings. Advantages Very easy to handle. Doesn’t break on falling. Inkjet printing on the panels of frosted Plexiglas can create effect of stained-glass ceiling . Disadvantages Is like plastic and tends to deform due to low melting point. Cannot be placed near halogen or incandescent lamp .
Acrylic glass Ceiling
Polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) tiles
Polyvinyl chloride (P.V.C.) tiles Advantages Long term durability. Lighter in weight. Very easy to handle. Doesn’t crack easily under stress . Doesn’t crack when being drilled even if drilled close to the edge . Disadvantages Is like plastic and tends to deform due to low melting point. Cannot be placed near halogen or incandescent lamp . C annot be polished to restore its clarity.
Comparison. Acrylic PVC Easy to work. Lighter than Acrylic. Doesn’t crack easily under stress. Doesn’t crack while working near edges. Cannot be polished to restore its clarity. Long lasting but turns yellow with time. Cannot be polished. More stronger than Acrylic. Has low flammability Expensive than acrylic. Difficult to work, cut and drill. Heavy and less flexible than PVC. Cracks easily under stress. Cracks while working near edges. Can be polished to restore its clarity. Doesn’t change color with time. Can be polished to attend finishing. More sturdy than PVC. Starts burning slowly. Cheaper than PVC.
Cement Fiber Boards.
Cement Fiber Boards. Advantages Long term durability. Lighter in weight. Very easy to handle. Fire , moisture and shock proof. Good sound absorption. Healthy and Environmental( No any asbestos and other harmful composition which is modern construction materials )
Wood Advantages Very economical. Natural acoustical properties. Esthetic appeal ,gives richness to the space. Effective for creating rustic look. Gives warmth to the space. Disadvantages Comparatively heavier than other materials. Lessens the visual height of the room. Cannot withstand attack of pest like termites for long period. Not recommended for damp spaces or leakage prone areas.
Wooden Ceilings
Traditional Wooden Ceiling
Basic Materials. The material used in false ceiling is made of up either hard wood or MDF or particle board. In MDF mica is used to glue the either sides of the board . Using solid wood is not recommended because it is heavy. The one on the inner side of the board is known as “balanced surface”. The on the external side i.e. the visible surface is known as the “finished surface”. Where as the wood gives the natural finish when polished .
WOOD MOLDING A lso known as wood molding or patti or trim is used as an enhancing accent in a home. Before the 19 th century, the presence of wood molding in once home was a symbol of wealth & taste. Nowadays, wood molding frequently used to conceal the seam where a window or door coverage with the wall or to draw attention to the transition from the floor or to the ceiling to the wall.
