WEL COME PROJECT REPORT FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF REST ROOM (G+1) INSIDE THE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE OFFICE CAMPUS, VEPERY, CHENNAI By Er.M . KUMAR, B.E., F.I.E., CHIEF ENGINEER TNPHC

BASIC PREMISE Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation has spread its wing in the field of research and development activities to adopt new technologies and materials in construction for giving comfortable, cost effective and timely outputs. The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu made an announcement under Rule 110 in the legislative Assembly on 08.08.2014 stating that “to promote innovation culture in Tamil Nadu, Tamil Nadu Innovation Initiatives (TANII) established in the State Planning Commission to promote Innovation in Government. Accordingly, the Tamil Nadu Police Housing Corporation Limited is proposed to construct rest room inside the Commissioner of Police office campus at Vepery , Chennai using thermocoal Ferro cement concrete panels / modular panels.

METHOD OF CONSTRUCTION Conventional foundation is used in the construction with necessary anchor rods in the plinth beam to hold the modular panels. The panels are joined by welding the wire meshes. Similarly, roof panels are anchored with the wall panels using anchorage rods. For fixing the modular panels skilled persons are necessary. Regarding masonry work like concreting and other works like form work and reinforcement tying, ordinary mason/bar bender etc. may be engaged. In this construction, the electrical, plumbing and sanitary arrangements are pre-determined and all the lines are made concealed.

COST ANALYSIS This is a new technology and does not cover in the PWD schedule of rates. Previously TNPHC has constructed a barracks with Ground + 1 floor of plinth area 1000 sq.ft . at Police Officers Mess campus, Egmore using Modular panels. The unit cost of construction of the barracks works out to Rs.1500/- per sq.ft . The study report is enclosed. Hence, by calculation, the cost to construct rest room (G+1) with 3072 sqft area inside the Commissioner of Police office campus at Vepery , Chennai works out to Rs.46.00 lakhs .

Features in the construction: Thermocoal Ferro cement concrete panels / modular panels is used for fast track construction. Concrete or plaster is applied to this panels to finish the structure The panels consist of Thermocoal /polystyrene core Galvanized wire mesh in both sides of Thermocoal Galvanized Wire Trusses Pierced through the Thermocoal core and welded to each of the outer layer sheets of wire mesh

The panels are of size 1200mm width and 2000 to 6000 mm length. The wall panels are reinforced with 3 mm wire meshes measuring 50x50mm with 50mm thick thermocoal core with 25mm thick plaster with chips & 12.50mm finishing on both sides. The finished thickness of wall panels is 125mm. The roof panels are reinforced with 3 mm wire meshes measuring 50x50mm with 80mm thick thermocoal core with 25mm thick plaster at bottom and 75mm thick concrete at the top. The finished thickness of roof panels is 175mm.

Basic Materials used: The Modular panels are made up of thermocoals with hi-tensile steel wires which is available all over India. Manufacturing Units: Manufacturing units are available in Chennai, Coimbatore and Bangalore. But they will supply modular panels all over India. Labours for construction: For fixing the modular panels skilled persons are necessary. Regarding masonry work like concreting and other works like form work and reinforcement tying, ordinary mason/bar bender etc. may be engaged. The unit cost: The unit cost of construction of the above barracks is Rs.1500/ sq.ft . Load Carrying Capacity: By calculation it is ascertained that these type of building have more load carrying capacity.

BENEFITS OF USING THESE PANELS This method enhances faster construction of buildings. The panels used give more thermal insulation giving a reduction of 10 to 12% of outside temperature. The core material used is thermocoal which is an excellent thermal insulator. It maintains indoor temperature. The external walls and roof can use water proofing mortar for additional protection. The material is fire proof. The panels have passed a 120 minutes fire protection test. It works very well as a fire proof material to internal and external concrete. The material is moisture proof. The panel is excellent for preventing condensation / absorption of moisture on interior walls. The material is sound proof. The panels have superior sound dampening capability when compared to masonry walls and this can be further enhanced by increasing the core ( thermocoal ) thickness.

The material is very light in weight. Its weight is only 20 % of the weight of the regular masonry wall which alleviates the fixed load of a structure. This material also facilitates its use in additions / up-gradation of the existing buildings. The material is flexible in design. The panels can be used in a variety of forms like curves, etc. The material has very good earth quake resistance. The cost of construction is 10 to 20% less than the conventional construction The panels give more structural integrity, fast implementation, uniform quality and simplicity in construction.
