FETAL DOPPLER: Invented in 1958 by DR.EDWARD H.HON, a fetal Doppler monitors or baby heart beat monitors is a hand-held ultrasound transducer used to detect the fetal heartbeat for prenatal care. It uses the Doppler effect to provide an audible simulation of the heart beat. Doppler fetal monitor or baby heart beat monitors is a handheld ultrasound baby heart beat monitor used to hear an embryo or fetus heart beat. Originally intended for use by health care professionals, despite this fetal Doppler devices have become extremely popular for personal use.

TYPES: Dopplers for home or hospital use differ in the following ways Manufacturer: popular manufacturers are baby Doppler, sonoline, Newman medical Nicolet, Arjo-Huntleigh, and summit Doppler. Probe Type: waterproof or not. Waterproof probes are used for water births. Probe Frequency: 2-MHZ or 3-MHZ probes. Most practitioners can find the probes.

2 MHZ WATER PROOF PROBE: The probe is optimized mainly for deep penetration for heavy patients and third trimester pregnancy.

3 MHZ WATER PROOF PROBE: The probe is good for the whole stage of pregnancy , especially for early pediatric/neonatal fetal heart beat detection , as early as 8- weeks.

Wave form

FETAL HEART RATES: Starting at week 5 the fetal heart rate accelerates by 3.3 bpm per day for the next month. The fetal heart begins to beat at approximately the same rate as the mother’s, which is typically 80 to 85 bpm. The approximate fetal heart rate for weeks 5to 9.

Week 5 starts at 80 and ends at 103 bpm. Week 6 starts at 103 and ends at 126 bpm. Week 7 starts at 126 and ends at 149 bpm. Week 8 starts at 149 and ends at 172 bpm. Week 9 the fetal heartbeat tends to beat with in a range of 155 to 195 bpm.

DOPPLER AUSCULTATION IN ADULTS: It was recently demonstrated that continuous Doppler enables the auscultation of valvular movements and blood flow sounds that are undetected during cardiac examination with a stethoscope in adults. The Doppler auscultation presented a sensitivity of 84% for the detection of aortic regurgitations while classic stethoscope auscultation presented a sensitivity of 58%.

FETAL HEART BEAT SOUNDS: Sounds of the fetal heart beats which like galloping HORSE , the beat rate is about twice as fast as the mother’s heart rate. The frequency of sounds are between 120-180 bpm.

WHAT IS A FETAL HEART MONITOR: Just like it sounds, these at-home monitors are used by mamas and sometimes family members to listen to baby’s heart beat. There are two basic kinds of at home fetal heart rate monitors: Dopplers, also known as doptones or Doppler probes, and Fetoscopes, which closely resemble stethoscopes.

WHAT DO FETAL HEART MONITORS DO? The Doppler uses high frequency sound waves and is a handheld ultrasound device, while fetoscope work by amplifying sound. The ultrasound waves of a Doppler pass through your skin and tissue into the body , where they bounce back after encountering movement. The Doppler then translates that movement into amplified sound.

METHODS OF FETAL MONITORING: Intermittent auscultation by Doppler Continuous external monitoring Continuous internal monitoring

ADVANTAGES OF DOPPLER: Available Quick and real time with immediate interpretation. Non-invasive and safe. Relatively of low cost. Mobile for poly trauma and unstable patients. High sensitivity.

DISADVANTAGES OF DOPPLER: Operator dependant. Not easy Limitations ( calcifications , air, obesity, ETC )
