Figures of speech

Figures of Speech- Words that portray emotions There are times when we are so gripped by emotion that we are at a loss for words to describe what we really feel. To say "I'm so hungry" does not exactly capture how hungry you are. And it does not mean that you are actually hungry for food

Without figurativelanguage

With figurative language

It is in this situation of sensation or emotion that we use figures of speech to convey the force or intensity behind it. It is common, for instance, to describe the majority win of a political candidate as a "landslide victory ."

Landslide" suggests the collapse of a cliff or mountainside. Apart from conveying a decisive victory, this image also suggests the total defeat of the opponent.
