Pakikipagkapwa - tao It is shown in the Filipino’s ability to empathize with others , the helpfulness and generosity in times of need ( pakikiramay ) , the pactice of bayanihan or mutual assistance, and the famous Filipino hospitability.

Family Orientation One’s family to the Filipino is the source of personal identity, the source of emotional and material support, and one’s main commitment and responsibility.

Joy and Humor We have a pleasant disposition, a sense of humor, and a propensity for happiness that contribute not only to the Filipino charm but to the indomitability of the Filipino spirit.

Flexibility, Adaptability and Creativity This quality of the Filipino is ,manifested in the ability to adapt to life in any part of the world, in the ability to make new things out of old scraps, in the capacity to keep old machines running and we can accept changes in life.

Hard Work and Industry Filipinos have the capacity for hard work given proper conditions.

Faith and Religiosity

Ability to Survive Filipinos make do with what is available in the environment.

Extreme Personalism This personalism is seen in the tendency to give personal interpretations to actions.

Extreme Family Centeredness This trait is manifested in factionalism, patronage, political dynasties, and in the protection of erring family members.

Lack Discipline Palusot Syndrome- we are impatient and unable to delay gratification or rewards , resulting in the use of short cuts, in striking the rules

Passivity and lack of Initiative Filipinos are generally passive and lacking in initiative. In many ways, it can be said that the Filipino is too patient and long suffering ( matiisin ).

Colonial Mentality Two Dimensions of Colonial Mentality of the Filipinos: A lack of patriotism An actual preference for things foriegn

Kanya-Kanya Syndrome Filipinos have selfish, self-serving attitude that generates a feeling of envy and competiveness towards others. Crab Mentality- referring to the tendency of pulling each other down by gossip, intrigue and criticism. Kanya-Kanya Syndrome results in the dampening of cooperative and community spirit and trampling upon the rights of others

Lack of Self-Analysis and Self- Reaction The Filipino lack of self-analysis and our emphasis of form is reinforced by an educational system that is often more in form than in substance and legal system that tends to substitute law for reality.

D. Value and habits of discipline and hard work, certain reinforcement system are required 1. In both government and private institutions we need to. a. Provide positive controls b. Keep performance records c. Maintain reward and recognition

2. We ought to reward excellence in whatever Filipino do by: A. identifying and making known centers of excellence in the Philippines. B. looking for, documenting and publicizing success who made it using various media. C. recognizing and encouraging advertisements that conve3y value of excellence and depict Filipino values. D. using media such as comics, radio programs in various dialects

E. For the goal of developing in ourselves the value and habits of self-reflection and analysis 1. Religion/religious movements 2. Small groups/NGO’s 3. Government leadership

POSITIVE ASPECTS OF PHILIPPINE VALUES

SOCIAL/CULTURAL SYSTEM

1. religion is used for the immediate solution of his material needs in the so- callead “magic”; 2. family solidarity is based on self-defense w/c later becomes individualism; 3. the grabbing of opportunities in his struggle for survival is called lack of value-synthesis; 4. the self provision of the exploited becomes dishonesty;

5. the nonacceptance of monopolous transaction is dubbed as resistance to change; 6. the perpetual consideration of possibilities is called ambivalence, indecision, inaction, and 7. the disregard of an uncertain future is termed anticipation, orientation to the present moment or lack of planning.

THE PHILIPPINE VALUE SYSTEM

1. Utang na lood (inner debt of gratitude) 2. Pakikisama smooth interpersonal relationship)

This anticipation, in spite of its negative appearances has two aspects: 1. The character of anticipation makes the Filipino live w/ one foot on earth and other in heaven. * Ako’y tao lamang ( I am just a human being ) 2. the second positive aspect is implied in the Filipino’s religious urge is his need for high ideals.
