What is RESILIENCE? •being able to cope in unexpected or difficult circumstances. • ability to persevere in the face of challenges, overcoming barriers and bouncing back after setbacks.

RESILIENCE involves learning from those setbacks, to help you better deal with them next time.

FIVE basic characteristics of RESILIENCE

Problem –Solving Skills - When a crisis emerges, resilient people are able to spot the solution that will lead to a safe outcome. In dangerous situations, less resilient people sometimes develop “ tunnel vision “. They fail to note important details or take advantage of opportunities.

Strong Social Connections Whenever you're dealing with a problem, it is important to have people who can offer support . Talking about the challenges you are facing can be an excellent way to gain perspective, look for new solutions .

Survivor Mentality When dealing with any potential crisis, it is essential to view yourself as a survivor . Resilient people avoid thinking like a victim of circumstance and instead look for ways to resolve the problem. While the situation may be unavoidable, they stay.

Emotional Regulation Resilience is also characterized by an ability to regulate emotions effectively. The ability to recognize that they are having an emotional response and to understand what is causing the response can help them better handle emotions and cope with the situation at hand.

Self-Compassion Resilient people are compassionate toward themselves. They notice when they need to take a break and can accept their emotions . Self-compassion can help boost overall health resilience and ensure you're ready to face life's challenges .

EXAMPLES OF RESILIENCE •Trying to take a positive perspective on situations

• Viewing challenges as learning opportunities

• Regulating emotions and expressing feelings in appropriate ways

• Focusing on the things you can control instead of dwelling on what you cannot change

• Recognizing that cognitive distortions are false

• Reframing negative thoughts to be more realistic and positive

What is ADAPTIVE RESILIENCE?

It is borne from adversity. It’s the sort of resilience people are referring to when they say, “I learned it the hard way”.

“SURVIVAL of the Fittest “

“ When the going gets tough, the tough get going”

Individuals who are resilient possess adaptive coping mechanisms that allow them to problem-solve and modify existing behavior to meet the expectations related to the change in life circumstances introduced by obstacles or life impediments . - Haddadi and Ali Besharat’s (2010)

Hence . . . Resilience acts as a PROTECTIVE FACTOR in l ife , allowing those who face adversity to successfully adapt and cope.

Research maintains that individuals who exhibit higher levels of resilience will recover and seek means to adjust to changing life & ensure the best possible outcome in their lives.

How are they CONNECTED? They’re both important - Being able to persevere through challenges ( Resilience ) - adjust to change ( adaptability )

How are they CONNECTED? Resilience and Adaptability - these are both key skills that will help people to learn and thrive now and in the future.

How are they CONNECTED? They interact in a feedback loop - Demonstrating resilience by bouncing back from setbacks often helps people to perform better in the future.

How are they CONNECTED? They interact in a feedback loop - This includes being able to adapt well to change.

How are they CONNECTED? They’re both related to mindset - Both skills are closely related to one unifying factor: mindset.

How are they CONNECTED? They’re both related to mindset Research suggests that having a good mindset makes you more adaptable, and as such able to deal better with change and transitions .

“ It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is most adaptable to change ,” Charles Darwin
