With the issue of ordinance in India the nationalized banks list included the Punjab National
Bank, Central Bank of India, Canara Bank and Allahabad Bank. Later 6 more banks joined the
list of nationalized banks.
Now, private banks in India are many and are playing a vital role in the Indian banking
industry development. The leading private banks include Kotak Mahindra Bank, ING Vysya
Bank, Karnataka Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI Commercial and International Bank, Jammu &
Kashmir Bank, etc.
Private Banks are full of expertise and tech-savvy people playing a major role. These banks have
made banking more customer-friendly and efficient to the extent that the public sector banks
have struggled and have forced to become competitive.
Private Banks in India do not have government stake and can be listed publicly. The list of
private banks in India is:
Dhanalakshmi Bank in Thrissur district started in the year 1927 with only 7 employees and
Rs.11, 000 capital.
Federal Bank began with a capital of Rs.5000 in 1931. This was established in a place in
Central Travancore near Tiruvalla.
HDFC Bank was established in 1994 and was the first banks to earn approval from RBI to set
up in the private sector as a bank.
ICICI Bank began in 1994 and slowly captured a wide area.
ING Vysya Bank came into existence in 2002 October after merging Vysya with ING, a
financial Dutch origin powerhouse. This was also one of the first banks to set in the private
sector of India.
Kotak Mahindra Bank is a leading financial private bank offering banking solutions covering
every sphere of life. Its services include stock broking, commercial banking, mutual funds,
investment banking and life insurance.
Jammu & Kashmir Bank referred as J&K Bank commenced in Kashmir initially after its
incorporation in 1938.
Karur Vysya Bank is also known as KVB. This was started in Karur, a state of Tamil Nadu in
1916.
UTI Bank became Axis Bank in 1994 and was sponsored by the LIC, UTI and GIC.
Yes Bank is the top private banks rated AAA. This is run by Ashok and Rana Kapoor and in
association is the Rabobank Nederland.
The other private banks include Karnataka Bank, Bank of Rajasthan, Catholic Syrian Bank,
Bharat Overseas Bank, Lakshmi Vilas Bank, South Indian Bank, Development Credit Bank,
Tamilnad Mercantile Bank and IndusInd Bank.
