Finite & Non-Finite Verbs There are two kinds of verbs in English, is finite and non finite verbs. The finite verb is the main verb in a sentence. A form of verb that contains tenses: present or past, influenced by agreement with the subject, also influenced by number (singular/plural).

Finite & Non-Finite Verbs Non-finite verbs are the opposite of Finite verbs, which is a form of verb that does not contain tenses: present or past. therefore non-finite verbs can be changed into verbs in the form of participles, gerunds, infinitives (to and bare).

finite and infinite verbs difference The main difference between a finite verb and a non-finite verb is that a finite verb can be used to denote the tense, person and number whereas a non-finite verb cannot do so. A finite verb is always found to agree with the subject and can stand alone as an independent clause. On the other hand, a non-finite clause does not agree with the subject or take any tense. It cannot pass off as an independent clause either.
