Dealing with fire Safety of staff Visitors Shared occupiers Contractors General public

Emergency procedures Fire detection Alarm raising Evacuation routes Calling emergency services Fire fighting

Fire detection The fire detection system should be adequate & properly maintained.

Alarm Raising There must be adequate systems in place to enable the alarm to be raised .

Evacuation routes Dedicated routes should be planned, contain signage, be kept clear and staff, contractors & visitors should be informed. All signs should conform to the Safety Signs and Signals regulations and be positioned at the point of changed direction. Periodic fire drills should be carried out to include a full evacuation.

Calling emergency services Ensure that systems are in place to enable the emergency services to be called

Fire Fighting All fire fighting equipment must be checked, by the Fire Marshall weekly, maintained & inspected by the equipment supplier. Extinguishers must be positioned near exits on each floor. On construction sites they should be in red box style carriers.

Emergency lighting Emergency lighting should be positioned & effectively luminate exits & directional signs. Corridors & associated exits Circulation areas Changes in levels Projections, protrusions & partitioning. Internal & external staircases.

Liaison with emergency services Liaison on construction sites is essential in respect of the changing landscape. Key areas to discuss are fire brigade access Fire fighting shafts Fire lifts & temporary hoists Escape routes Positions of dry & wet risers Fire points

Fire safety plan The organisations fire safety procedures The names & positions of persons responsibilities in respect of fire safety General site fire precautions Detection & alarms Hot work permits Site accommodation Evacuation plans Procedures for calling the fire brigade Drills, training & recording

Fire marshall duties Ensure that all procedures, precautionary measures & site fire safety standards set out in the fire plan are clearly understood and complied with by all persons on the site. Ensure that hot work permit system is established and its use monitored. Carry out weekly checks of fire fighting equipment Carry out daily inspection of the fire escape route & signage. Liase with site security personnel. Maintain a written record of all checks During an alarm, execute those duties required for the safe evacuation
