FIRE PROTECTION COURSE

LECTURE (2) Classification of fire protection hazard occupancies, system classes & hydraulic criteria.

INTROUCTION The fire is classified according to the occupancy , the standard concerned with classification according to NFPA #13 The occupancy classification for this standard shall be related to sprinkler design , installation and water supply requirements. FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 3

CLASSIFICATION OF HAZARDS 1- Light Hazard Occupancy 2- Ordinary Hazard Occupancy (Group 1) 3- Ordinary Hazard Occupancy (Group 2) 4- Extra Hazard Occupancy (Group 1) 5- Extra Hazard Occupancy (Group 2) FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 4

The following occupancies shall be protected as light hazard occupancy: Quantity of combustibles are low and/or combustibility of contents are with low rates of heat release expected. 1. LIGHT HAZARD occupancy FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 5

( 9 ) Museums (1 ) Nursing or convalescent homes (1 1 ) Offices, including data processing (1 2 ) Residential (1 3 ) Restaurant seating areas (1 4 ) Theaters and auditoriums, excluding stages and prosceniums (1 5 ) Unused attics (1) Animal shelters ملاجئ حيوانات (2) Churches (3) Clubs ( 4 ) Educational ( 5 ) Hospitals, including animal hospitals and veterinary facilities ( 6 ) Institutional ( 7 ) Kennels بيوت الكلاب ( 8 ) Libraries, except large stack rooms 1- light hazard occupancies according to nfpa #13 FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 6

The following shall be protected as ordinary hazard group (1) occupancy criteria. Quantity of combustibles are moderate and Combustibility of contents are low with Storage heights 8 feet (2.4m) or less and Moderate rates of heat release expected. FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 2. Ordinary hazard (group 1) 7

Ordinary hazard (group 1) occupancies include occupancies having usage and conditions similar to the following (1) Automobile parking and showrooms (2) Bakeries (3) Beverage manufacturing (4) Canneries مصانع تعبئة الطعام (5) Dairy products manufacturing and processing مصانع الالبان (6) Electronic plants 2- ORDINARY HAZARD (GROUP1) Occupancies ACCORDING TO NFPA #13 FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 8

(7) Glass and glass products manufacturing (8) Laundries (9) Mechanical rooms. (10) Restaurant service area (kitchen). 2- ORDINARY HAZARD (GROUP1) Occupancies ACCORDING TO NFPA #13 FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 9

The following shall be protected as ordinary hazard group (2) occupancy criteria. Quantity of combustibles are moderate with high combustibility of contents with storage heights do not exceed 12 feet (3.7m) and expected moderate to high rates of heat release . 3. ORDINARY HAZARD (GROUP 2) FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 10

(1) Agricultural facilities (2) Barns and stables (10) Horse stables 3- ORDINARY HAZARD (GROUP2) OCCUPANCIES ACCORDING TO NFPA #13 FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 11

(27) Tire manufacturing (28) Tobacco products manufacturing مصانع التبغ (29) Wood machining (30) Wood product assembly 3- ORDINARY HAZARD (GROUP2) OCCUPANCIES ACCORDING TO NFPA #13 FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 14

The following shall be protected as extra hazard group (1) occupancy criteria. Quantity of combustibles are very high and combustibility of contents are also high with high rates of heat release expected quantities are small with flammable/combustible liquids present. 4. EXTRA HAZARD (GROUP 1) FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 15

(10) Upholstering with plastic foams التنجيد بالفايبر 4- EXTRA HAZARD (GROUP 1) OCCUPANCIES ACCORDING TO NFPA #13 FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 16

The following shall be protected as extra hazard group (2) occupancy criteria. Quantity of combustibles are very high with combustibility of contents, very high also with high rates of heat release expected. Flammable/combustible liquids are moderate to large quantities, present or contents are shielded. 5. EXTRA HAZARD (GROUP 2) FIRE PROTECTION OCCUPANCY CLASSIFICATIONS 17
