Introduction The state of Jammu and Kashmir has a unique topography and diverse agro-climatic conditions which divide the state into three zones like Tropical Jammu Division Temperate Kashmir Valley Cold Arid Z one of Ladakh The state is bestowed with natural water resources with great potential for development of varied types of fisheries like Cold water fisheries, Warm water fisheries.
The State is blessed with Rivers like Chenab, Indus , Jhelum along with famous Lakes like Dal lake, Wullar lake, Manasbal lake and Mansar lake .
Jammu city is known as the CITY OF TEMPLES . Kashmir is famous for its sensational natural beauty with lofty mountains and crystal clear water flowing down the mountains.
Origin of Fisheries in Jammu and Kashmir The first batch of 10,000 eggs of trout arrived from United Kingdom in the year 1899, but all of them perished . Department of Fisheries was created in 1903 and was known as department of 'Game Preservation' after the successful introduction of trout in Kashmir .
Trout Rearing Unit Kokernag , District Anantnag Mother trout fishing farming project at Kokernag is built under European Union Assistance . Trout hatchery at Laribal produce quality seeds of Rainbow trout and Brown trout .
Trout Feed Mill at NFSF Manasbal Kashmir These two projects produce more than Three million eggs per year. At present the department has 42 trout rearing units all over the state.

Angling and Fishing License Kashmir is called the Anglers Paradise. Angling is open from month of April to September every year
Angling is not allowed without a license / permit procurable from the Directorate of Fisheries. The license is valid for one day only. The bag limit is 6 fish only . No sharing or transfer of fish permit is allowed. Only one rod per angler is allowed . Rules for Angling
Fishing license Fishing license can be procured from the Directorate of Fisheries. The angling fee is charged on a per day basis @ Rs . 2000/- per day from the foreign anglers and Rs . 1000/- per day from local Anglers.
Achievements in Fisheries sector
The sport fisheries is gaining importance. In 2013-14 a total of 1878 Numbers of Trout permits were issued for angling, during 2014-15, 1344 Numbers of permits were Issued for angling. Sport Fisheries Anji seed farm, Reasi produces quality fish seed of this species. A Mahseer fish farm is undertaken at Billawar in district Kathua for the replenishment of the endangered Mahseer fish. Mahseer Fisheries

This law defines the water, Reserved waters, Protected waters, Trout waters and Sanctuaries. A person found in any sanctuary shall be liable to be punished for two months or have to give a fine of Rs10 . Offences punishable under this act shall be inquired into by the State courts.
