Fishing crafts are boats used for
fishing in marine and inland
waters.
Fishing gears are instruments
used for fish catching
Different types of fishing crafts
Catamarans: float of logs tied together with longer one in the middle.
Length – 5-12m, Width- 0.7-1.4m and depth 0.3 to 0.7m. Normally it is
formed of two main logs and two side logs.
Catamarans are of four types:
Orissa or Ganjam types: Boat shaped and made of five logs which are
pegged with wood instead of being tied together.
Andhra type: Larger than orissa
type, consists of heavy logs with
sides formed of strong median logs.
Coromandel type: Used in
Chennai. 3-5 logs of different
lengths.
Boat catamaran: used in coast of
Mandapam. Formed of 3 logs fitted
like a boat
MASULA BOAT
Frameless double ended boat
Made from mango plants stiched
together with palm leaf fibres
8-12 m long, Weak construction
and can be used in fair weather
Used for gill net fishing
Bar boats of Orissa and Padaya on
Andhra coast are examples
DUGOUT CANOES
Small, light boat without keel
Made of large log of wood form
which the inner part has been
scooped out i.e it is a single piece
boat
Bottom is thicker than the sides to
provide equillibrium
Popular in Kerala and Konkan coasts
Long dugout is called Vanchi or
odam and small is called thony
PLANK BUILD CANOES AND DINGHI &
NAUKA
PLANK BUILD CANOES: Modified dugout which is enlarge
with planks on the sides. Used in Kerala, North Mumbai and
Kathiawar
DINGHI & NAUKA: Long curved boats commonly used in
West Bengal and Orissa. These boats are of size of 12-15m*
