Fixed and constructed response format Presented by: Cynthia D. Pinyuhan
Fixed Response Format Students’ possible responses have been anticipated and their task is to choose the appropriate response from those offered prompt the student to select their answer from the response options.
Most common types of fixed response Multiple choice-requires a student to select one answer from a pre-made list of answers . ( e.g NAT, RAT, NLCA,NCAE) True-False Test items Matching Ranking Embedded-choice items
Time considerations and advantages : Student can answer more multiple choice questions in a shorter period of time than constructed response items. Students generally can answer 1 multiple-choice item per minute and 2 true-false test items per minute ( Oosterhof , Conrad, & Ely, 2008). Fixed-response would be a great way to quickly assess student at the beginning of a concept to be able to measure prior knowledge or to quickly check for understanding in the middle or end of a concept. There is consistency and objective scoring
1. A fixed-response test item also takes time to write since the teacher must create an appropriate stem and response options. The response options should be able to measure not only what the student knows but the distractors should help the teacher in identifying the student’s thought process. 2. Fixed-response items are susceptible to guessing. disadvantages :
Constructed response format requires students to formulate their own answers. They can include different elements like paragraphs, drawings, diagrams, maps, charts, and computations. open-ended, short answer, or essay questions. they require the student to construct and develop their own answer without the help of other suggestions or choices. For example: Write two paragraphs explaining the theme of the Wedding Dance. Cite textual evidence. If Kim needs curtains for four windows and each window is four feet by three feet, how much fabric does Kim need? Draw a diagram and show your work to support your answer.
> Oosterhof , Conrad, and Ely (2008, p. 92) states that a scoring plan should have 3 characteristics: total number of points assigned to the item based on its importance relative to other items, (2) specific attributes to be evaluated in students’ responses, and (3) for each attribute, criteria for awarding points, including partial credit. A scoring plan is essential for constructed response (especially short answer or essay).
A constructed response answer can be written using RACE: R estate the question, A nswer the question, C ite evidence for your answer, and E xplain why the evidence supports your answer.
