building a background Flash fiction cannot be considered completely new because it can be traced back to older genres such as the fable and the parable . Notable flash fiction includes fables like Aesop’s Fables and classics from writers like Walt Whitman, Ernest Hemingway, and Italo Calvo. In the Philippines, the genre has its equivalent called dagli . • Examples of dagli appeared on a regular basis in newspapers and magazines even during the American occupation in the Philippines. • Popular writers of this genre are Jose Corazon de Jesus, Lope K. Santos, and Teodoro Agoncillo . • At present, this genre has been popularized because of the internet and the social media.

WHY WRITE FLASH FICTION? Flash fiction is extremely difficult to write well because the writer has to cover a lot of ground with few words. Imagine the typical story arch with a beginning, rising action, climax, and conclusion. Many flash fiction stories are able to touch on all of those elements, all within the strict word count. The word limit provides a very creative challenge. Many readers also enjoy reading flash fictions because flash fiction stories are so easy to get into and take little time commitment. Flash fictions are so fast and easy that people read the stories on the spot and can immediately share feedback and even dream up new ideas (Smith, 2018).

HOW TO WRITE FLASH FICTION? 1. Jump into the action ◦With flash fiction, you don’t have time for lengthy explanations, character introductions, and setting descriptions. You need to go straight into what is happening in order to get everything you want in the story. ◦This does not mean that you don’t care about characters and setting. This fact actually forces you to build setting and character through plot.

HOW TO WRITE FLASH FICTION? 2. Figure out the ending before writing ◦The best flash fiction stories involved great endings and plot twists. A target for flash fiction endings is surprise . Surprise is great because it immediately gets the reader into an emotional state to dig back and understand more.

HOW TO WRITE FLASH FICTION? 3. Try not to worry too much about word count until you hit the editing process ◦When writing, keep your story brief and be conscious that this is flash fiction. Try not to worry about the exact word count on the first draft. The editing process will help you reach your target word count. The issue of keeping an eye on your word count as you write is you consciously start lowering your word count as you get closer to the end of the story. This leads to a slightly more verbose start of the story and a slightly rushed ending (Smith, 2018).

A jeepney Tapestry

unlocking vocabulary kick-ass- strikingly or overwhelmingly tough, aggressive, or powerful posh- elegant, fashionable untainted- not contaminated, spoiled, or affected with something bad fads- craze, fashion, trend fester- to rot or poison

A jeepney tapestry And so it began with a scream. Queenie rolled over from the front of the jeepney to its entire length all the way back. She was going to make a run for it, picturing herself like Katniss or some kick-ass action heroine from a movie. She placed her bag between her and the gun being wildly pointed at her face. All her life, she struggled with minimum wage as a waitress in a posh Makati restaurant. An only child supporting her mother who was fighting against lung cancer, she was steeped in dept already, until her new employer took a “liking” to her. She can’t die now. Not with her mother waiting for her. Not with the hope shining down on her. But, the shot rang out.

A jeepney tapestry Aling Nora screamed. She was having one heck of a day already and her first thought upon seeing the gunman was- where will they get the money for my funeral? At 50 years old, a lifetime of cleaning other people’s houses while supporting a drunkard of a husband and 8 children who never got to finish high school but instead decided that getting pregnant or getting someone pregnant was more fun, had left her bone- dead tired and spent. Now, not only did she have to support her husband and children, but her ever-growing number of grandchildren as well. Maybe, she thought, before fainting, this was for the best and she’ll finally get her much deserved rest.

A jeepney tapestry The gunman was momentarily distracted by the old woman who fainted. The young policeman, was still fresh and untainted by the system he was serving, decided that it was his sworn duty to protect the passengers. And so he seized that moment of confusion, and bravely pulled his gun out of his jacket’s’ inner pocket, and with all of his training coming into focus, he pulled the trigger.

A jeepney tapestry Edrex, saw the flash of light and suddenly felt the warm gush of blood soaking through his favorite Zara shirt and dripping on his limited edition neon green Nike shoes. He dropped his gun, before turning to the policeman to say, “What the freak man? I wasn’t really going to shoot you know.” Then his eyeballs rolled up, and the world blurred before his eyes, before he fell on the jeepney floor. Poor middle class boy Edrex, who came home every day from school with only the maids to keep him company. He felt forgotten and sad, because his parents were rarely home even during the weekends. He did not understand that they were moving heaven and earth so they could buy a house for him to inherit someday, and so that he could study in the private school that charges Php 100,000 per semester, and so that he could as well, have the latest fads and go to Boracay whenever he wants.

A jeepney tapestry Unfortunately, all he could see was how they were too busy for him and how they seem to take him for granted. And so he got angry at them, at himself and the world in general. You see, anger tends to breed, fester, and consume. Until one day, today to be exact, he decided that he would make them listen and pay attention to him. Poor poorEdrex, if only he saw his parents crawling home from work because they were so tired, if only he heard them cry after they were humiliated by their bosses when they failed to deliver the work that was expected from them, and if only, he felt their joy each time they know that all their hard work was for the future security of their only son.

A jeepney tapestry No, he didn’t see, hear or felt any of those. You see, Edrex was always too busy staying “connected” via FB, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumbler, but didn’t have enough time to look up, observe, see and hear things with his heart. But that’s too late now. His heart, it seemed, had stopped breathing. And all this time, Mang Ando, the jeepney driver who didn’t have his lunch yet, kept on thinking- was his wife able to line up for the Mayor’s free 2 kilos of rice before heading to her usual tongits spot? And how the heck was he gonna get rid of the bloodstains on the seats?

word memoir

word memoir Let’s see if you can tell a story of your life in 6 words! Whether it’s humorous, or profound, or somewhere in between, this exercise will give you an idea of events or memories or emotions that have some type of meaning in your life. 1) Create a “you” list –fill the page: List as many words as you can about yourself –things you like, feelings you have. Don’t cross out, change, or rewrite anything. Don’t worry about spelling –just write. You are going for quantity, so write as much as you can for at least 2 minutes. 2) Circle 3 items that inspire you to say more: Pick words from your list that, if heard aloud, would make you think about something that happened in your life, a story or an idea, or something that was important to you.

word memoir 3) From those items you circled, select one: “Free write” about it for at least 2 minutes. “Free write” means you just start writing about that idea, object, role or event. The only rule is: don’t stop writing for at least two minutes. Whatever comes to mind is fair game. 4) Synthesize: Develop a 6-word phrase that captures the essence of what your topic means to you.
