Flue Gas Desulphurization

Some insights on how SO2 affects us and a specific way named as 'FGD' to be implemeted in plants.

2. FLUE GAS:   Flue gas refers to the  combustion exhaust gas produced at  power plants T he gas that originates from combustion plants and which contains the reaction products of fuel and combustion air and residual substances such as particulate matter (dust), sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and carbon monoxide. POLLUTION : Pollution is the introduction of substances(or energy) that cause adverse changes in the environment and living entities. Pollution, even in minuscule amount impacts the ecological balance In general, 90% or more of the sulphur in the fuel will be found as sulphur oxides in the flue gas. Typically, the flue gas concentration of SO2 is of the order of  0.1 to 0.25% by volume . Effects of Sulphur Di Oxide on human health

3. Working: FGD is the process of removal of Sox compounds from emission. The most common FGD technology uses a limestone/gypsum wet- process. Components– Recirculation pumps, Gas distribution tray, Sprayer, Oxidizer

4. Considering only the sulphur removal equipment (FGDs, or Flue Gas Desulfurisation ), the estimated investment required is over Rs 80,000 crore across India. Only 1% of the total coal-fired power plant capacity which is required to comply with the emission standards under the current phasing plan have installed the mandatory flue-gas desulphurisers (FGD), an equipment to control toxic sulphur dioxide emissions. -As on JUL 18-2020
