FLY ASH *COMPOSITION *ADVANTAGE *PROPERTIES *ADVANTAGES *USES

Fly ash is primarily made up of oxides of aluminum, iron, calcium, and silicon. It also contains smaller amounts of magnesium, potassium, sodium, titanium, and sulfur.  Composition details  Major oxide components : SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, and CaO Minor oxide components :  MgO , Na2O, K2O, SO3, SrO , TiO2, MnO , and P2O5 Minerals : Quartz, mullite , hematite, magnetite, and maghemite

Advantages  Environmental : Reduces demand for carbon-intensive Portland cement and reduces carbon dioxide emissions Strength : Improves concrete's strength and chemical resistance Workability : Makes fresh concrete easier to pump and improves its workability Durability : Makes concrete more durable Heat of hydration : Reduces the heat of hydration in concrete, which prevents thermal cracking Shrinkage : Reduces concrete shrinkage

PRORERTIES Fly ash has many properties, including its color, chemical composition, particle size, and density.  Color  Fly ash can be gray, reddish, or tan, depending on its calcium and iron content Darker fly ash has a finer particle size and higher carbon content Chemical composition  Fly ash is made of reactive aluminosilicate and calcium aluminosilicate , which are represented as aluminum oxide, silicon dioxide, and calcium oxide The chemical composition of fly ash is regularly checked as part of quality control

Particle size  Fly ash particles have a honeycomb structure with a large surface area Fly ash has a finer particle gradation than cement, and is used to replace cement in concrete Fly ash has a coarser particle gradation than cement, and is used in building materials like mortar Density  The density of ordinary fly ash is 1.8-2.3g/cm3, which is about two-thirds of Portland cement Compressive strength  Fly ash with a high surface area and small particle size has a high compressive strength
