What did you eat today?

What is Food? Anything which we eat to live is called food . For example: Roti , Bread, Butter, fruits, vegetables, pulses, vegetable oil, butter, clarified butter, eggs, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, etc. Food is necessary for us because it provides matter for the growth of our body and energy to do work. Food is a substance eaten by us to do work, grow, maintain our body and remain healthy.

What are the food items made of? We eat different kinds of food at different times and on different days. A particular variety or preparation of food served as a part of a meal is called dish. Any of the components or materials required to prepare a food dish are called ingredients. For Example: Boiled rice : rice + water Chapati : Atta + water Vegetable curry : salts + spices + oil + water

Where do this ingredients come from?

Sources of Food Plant Sources Animal Sources Plant are the sources of food ingredients like grains, cereals, vegetables and fruits. Animals provide us with milk, meat products and eggs.

Different edible parts of plants

Some plants have two or more edible parts. For Example: Mustard Plant Leaves are used as leafy vegetable. Seeds are used to extract mustard oil. Banana Plant Fruit Leaves as vegetables

Sprouting When the seeds begin to grow by developing tiny roots, they are called sprouts . After washing these sprouted seeds you can eat them . They can also be boiled. Add some spices and get a tasty snack to eat. How to make sprouts of moong or chana at home? Take some seeds of moong or chana . Put a small quantity of seeds in a container filled with water and leave it aside for a day. Next day drain the water completely and leave the seeds in the vessel. Observe the seeds the next day, a white structure may have grown out of seed which are known as s prouts .

Where Does Honey come from?

Bees collect nectar(sweet juices) from flowers, convert it into honey and store it in their hive. Flowers and their nectar may be available only for a part of a year. So, bees store this nectar for their use through the year. When we find such a beehive, we collect the food stored by the bees as honey .

What do animals eat ?

Types of animals depending on food they eat Animals which eat only plants, plant parts or plant products are called herbivores such as cow and deer. Animals which eat other animals are called carnivores such as tiger and lion. The animals which eat both plants and animals are called omnivores such as human beings. The animals that eat flesh of dead animals are called scavengers . They help in cleaning the environment. So they are called natural cleaning agent for example; vulture and jackle.
