FOOTPRINTS WITHOUT FEET ~H.G WELLS

ABOUT THE AUTHOR Herbert George Wells Herbert George Wells (1866–1946) was a renowned English novelist, historian, and social critic, popularly known as the “Father of Science Fiction.” His imaginative works introduced revolutionary ideas like time travel, invisibility, and alien invasion long before modern science explored them. Some of his most famous novels include The Time Machine , The Invisible Man , and The War of the Worlds . Apart from fiction, he also wrote historical and political works such as The Outline of History . Nominated several times for the Nobel Prize in Literature, Wells left a lasting legacy by blending science with social and moral concerns.

INTRODUCTION “ Footprints Without Feet,” an excerpt from famous novel The Invisible Man (1897 ) written by H.G. Wells, is an interesting science fiction story that combines science with moral lessons. The story revolves around Griffin, a brilliant but short-tempered scientist who invented a drug that could make a person invisible. Though he was successful in achieving something extraordinary, he failed as a human being because he used his discovery for selfish and criminal purposes. Instead of becoming a great scientist admired by society, Griffin turned into a lawless wanderer feared by everyone .

GRIFFIN AND HIS LANDLORD Griffin lived as a tenant in London but was disliked by his landlord. When the landlord tried to evict him, Griffin became angry and used his power of invisibility to take revenge. He removed his clothes and became invisible, throwing things at his landlord to scare him. To make the revenge complete, he set the landlord’s house on fire and ran away unseen. This incident marked the beginning of Griffin’s misuse of science. It showed how his intelligence, mixed with arrogance and anger, turned into destruction .

SURVIVAL IN LONDON After escaping, Griffin wandered on the streets of London without clothes, shoes, food, or shelter. The cold weather forced him to break into a big store. There, he wore warm clothes, boots, and hats, ate sweets and cold meat, and drank wine. He even slept comfortably on a pile of quilts. However, when the assistants arrived the next morning, he panicked and ran away. Later, he entered a theatrical company’s shop where he managed to steal bandages, false nose, dark glasses, and a wig to look like a normal man and cover his invisibility. Yet again, instead of earning respect, he turned to theft and deceit .

GRIFFIN IN IPING AND ATTACK ON JAFFER Griffin then travelled to the village of Iping , where he rented a room in an inn. At first, people were curious about his strange appearance, wrapped fully in bandages and glasses. However, soon suspicion grew as mysterious incidents started happening, including the sudden theft of money. The situation worsened when Mrs. Hall, the innkeeper’s wife, entered his room and saw strange activities—furniture moving on its own. Griffin lost his temper and revealed his invisibility. When Mr. Jaffer , the village constable, tried to arrest him, Griffin turned violent. He attacked Jaffer brutally, knocked him unconscious, and escaped once again, proving that he had become a dangerous criminal.

CONCLUSION AND MESSAGE “ Footprints Without Feet” is not just a story about invisibility, but also about how a man’s misuse of knowledge can destroy him. Griffin had an extraordinary gift that could have made him famous, but his immoral actions—setting fire to the house, stealing, frightening innocent people, and attacking Jaffer —turned him into an outcast. H.G. Wells conveys a strong moral message: science should be used for the benefit of humanity, not for selfishness or destruction. The title itself reflects both the wonder and the danger of invisibility, reminding us that power without responsibility always leads to downfall.
