What do you mean by structure? That is something of many parts that is put together.

What do you mean by function? The kind of action or activity proper to a person, thing, or institution.

How do you define structural functionalism? It is a framework that seeks to explain society as a complex system whose parts work together for stability and to promote solidarity.

Government Education Functional units of society Family 01 02 03 Economy 04 Religion 05 Science 03

The members of each functional unit are aware of their specific roles and duties, and they also share a common cultural beliefs and social norms.

When did the Theory of Structural Functionalism began to decline? It was began during the 1960’s as more conflict-based social theories began to gain acceptance. Contributing reasons behind the decline are inability to take into account social change , inequalities among different members of society and conflicts and contradictions that occur between various functional units in a modern and complex society

What is Conflict-based social theory? Tend to view differences in values and unequal access to resources as inevitably leading to conflict between societal groups and institutions.

Background and History of Structural Functionalism There were seminal thinkers of the middle 1800s who made direct observations of primitive cultures, theorizing about organization of these folk in relation to Western society.

Alfred Radcliffe-Brown English Functionalist-Anthropologist Levi-Strauss Bronislaw Malinowski German-American Functionalist-Anthropologist Polish-British Functionalist-Anthropologist . Functionalists and anthropologists

What is Theory of Social Action? According to Talcott Parsons, this theory believes that every individual's personality differs from their social background. For instance, an illiterate individual cannot be named as 'unintelligible'.

What is the Concept of Voluntarism in Social Action Theory? Implies the conscious mind, capable of making decisions Examples: Walking to the store (intention is to purchase something). Shaking hands (intention is to greet another person).

What is Social Integration? It means that there are no elements of society that are in actual conflict with each other. If socialization works, each of us values similar ideals, holds similar goals, understands the importance of cooperatively working toward the same ends.

Structural-Functional Theory In global level, this theory explains how and why all of the elements in a society might cooperate with each other to form social progress.

How do you define institution? It is a social invention that meets certain requirements of a society. Set of rules, regulations, norms and expectations regarding the behaviors of people along cultural guidelines.

How do you define institution? Every society needs a way of processing young citizens through childhood and on into adulthood, marriage, child-rearing, and so on.

What is Institution of the Nuclear Family? Provides individuals with a set of tried and true behavioral codes and the rules should be followed like you will grow up wanting to marry one day, raise a passel of kids, and eventually bounce grandchildren on your knee.
