FORMATIVE EVALUATION NAME: Aitzaz Ahsan Roll No: 2k16/ BedEL /04 Topic: Formative Evaluation

DEFINITION Evaluation taken at varying interval throughout a course to provide information and feedback that will help improve the quality of student learning and the quality of course title. It is used to monitor the learning process of students during the period of instruction. It aims at improvement of instruction. It provides continuous feedback to both teacher and student concerning learning successes and failure while instruction is in process.

ORIGIN OF THE TERM “ Scriven coined” the term formative evaluation in 1967. Scriven (1967) first suggested a distinction between Formative and Summative evaluation. Scriven described formative evaluation was intended to foster development within an ongoing activity.

CHARACTERISTICS OF FORMATIVE EVALUATION. It is an integral part of learning peocess . It occurs frequently during the course of instruction. It’s results are made immediately kow to the learner. It may sometimes take teachers observation only. It reinforces learning of the students.

PURPOSE OF THE FORMATIVE EVALUATION To provide feedback for teachers to modify subsequent learning activities and experiences. To identify and remediate group or individual deficiencies. Major purpose of formative evaluation is to make adjustments in an educational activity as soon as they are needed. Students find opportunity to revise and refine their thinking by means of formative assessment.

TYPES OF FORMATIVE EVALUATION Diagnosing: It is concerned with determining the most appropriate method or instructional materials conductive to learning. Placement: It is concerned with finding out the positions of an individual in the curriculum from which he has to start learning. Monitoring: It is concerned with keeping track of the day today progress of the learners and to point out changes necessary in the methods of teaching instructional strategies etc.

ADVANTAGES OF FORMATIVE EVALUATION Assessment for learning Focuses on the process Quickly highlights real problems. Easy to prioritise problems. Verbal protocols valuable source of information. Monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedbacks that can be provided by teacher to improve their teaching and by the students to improve their learning.

DISADVANTAGES OF FORMATIVE EVALUATION Difficult to motivate students performance on low stake assignments. Time consuming for instructor to provide effective feedback. Intensive dedication required to continue ongoing assessment. Time consuming for instructor to assess during the lesson and fear that they can not finish the lesson.

CONCLUSION Tests program plans, messages, materials, strategies, or modifications for weaknesses and strengths before they are put into effect. Allows the evaluator to probe the feelings, beliefs, and impressions of participants. Generates community support for the proposed project or program.
