Friability test of uncoated, film coated, enteric coated and double layer tablet
Definition of friability Friability is defined as the % of weight loss by tablet due to mechanical stress during packing, handling and transportation.
T heory D etermine physical strength of compressed tablet U ncoated tablets upon exposure to mechanical shock Mechanical stress tablet are able to with stand during their manufacturing, distribution and handling Instrument used FRIBILATOR
Construction of apparatus: It consist of plastic chamber which divided into two parts . (1) Timer (2 ) Revolving automatic rod for the plastic tumbling chamber. ( It revolve at a speed of 25 rpm and during each revolution the tablet falls from a height of 6 inch to undergo shock)
Working : (1) Take 6 g of tablet of each brand (2) Weigh them carefully and note the reading (3) Place these tablet in the tumbling machine (4) Rotate the chamber for 4 minutes or 100 revolution. (5) After completion of 4 minute draw out the tablet (6) Clean the tablet from the powder. (7) Weigh them again. (8) Loss in the weight of tablet indicate the friability of tablets, and computed by following formula: Friability = weight loss/initial weight Friability = W1-W2/W1 * 100
Calculation and observation for enteric coated tablet: No. of tablets Initial weight of tablets Final weight of tablets Weight loss Friability W1 W2 W1-W2 W1-W2/W1 *100 33 6g 5.97 0.03 0.03/6 *100 = 0.5%
Result The friability of tablet is 0.5%. Tablet was manufactured at specification of B.P. According to B.P friability of tablet must be less than 0.8% whereas friability of our sample sample tablet is 0.5%. Hence batch of sample is accepted.
Calculation and observation for uncoated coated tablet: No. of tablets Initial weight of tablets Final weight of tablets Weight loss Friability W1 W2 W1-W2 W1-W2/W1 *100 11 6.02g 5.83g 0.19 0.17/6.02 *100 =2.82 %
Result The friability of tablet is 2.82%. Tablet was manufactured at specification of B.P. According to B.P friability of tablet must be less than 0.8% whereas friability of our sample tablet is 2.82%. Hence batch of sample is rejected.
Calculation and observation for film coated tablet: No. of tablets Initial weight of tablets Final weight of tablets Weight loss Friability W1 W2 W1-W2 W1-W2/W1 *100 5 6.11g 6.08g 0.19 0.03/6.11 *100 =0.5 %
Result: The friability of tablet is 0.5%. Tablet was manufactured at specification of B.P. According to B.P friability of tablet must be less than 0.8% whereas friability of our sample sample tablet is 0.5%. Hence batch of sample is accepted.
Calculation and observation for double layer tablet No. of tablets Initial weight of tablets Final weight of tablets Weight loss Friability W1 W2 W1-W2 W1-W2/W1 *100 6 6g 5. 97g 0.03 0.03/6 *100 =0.5 %
Result : The friability of tablet is 0.5%. Tablet was manufactured at specification of B.P. According to B.P friability of tablet must be less than 0.8% whereas friability of our sample sample tablet is 0.5%. Hence batch of sample is accepted.
