Friction

Friction – is a force that is produced when two uneven surfaces move against each other. - it can hinder the movement of an object or prevent it from moving at all

T he force of friction depends on how uneven the two surfaces are. - Dry and rough surfaces produce greater amounts of friction than smooth and wet surfaces.

T he force of friction depends on the force that pushes two surfaces against each other.

Types of Friction Static Friction occurs in objects that are resting against each other. Example:

Sliding Friction occurs when two surfaces slide against each other. a lesser type of friction since it keeps the surface of one object from sliding too fast against the surface of another object. Example:

Rolling Friction is produced when a surface rolls over another surface. considered a weaker type of friction because there is hardly any friction between the two surfaces. Example:

Fluid Friction also known as air resistance or drag is produced when an object moves through fluids such as water and air. the amount of resistance produced by the fluid depends on the shape, material, and speed of object as well as the viscosity of the fluid. Example:

Effects of Friction Friction makes heavy objects to move Friction reduces efficiency in machines Friction can reduce the speed of vehicles

How Friction can be Useful Friction helps you write and draw. Friction make it easy for you to walk or run
