Definition - What does  Android Froyo (Android 2.2)  mean? The Android Froyo was released on May 20, 2010 with bug fixes and extra features. Android 2.2, or Froyo (short for frozen yogurt), is the sixth major consumer release of the Android mobile OS. It is also based on version 2.6.32 of the Linux kernel. Froyo, first released on the Nexus One, includes various improvements over previous versions - from new home screen widgets to more efficient data communication and transfer applications .

D rawbacks of previous versions- Limitation of Speed, memory, and performance optimizations . Adobe Flash  not supported. Only Support for high displays up to 320 PPI.

Features of FROYO Speed, memory, and performance optimizations Additional application speed improvements, implemented through  JIT compilation Support for the  Android Cloud to Device Messaging  (C2DM) service, enabling  push notifications USB (universal serial bus)tethering and  Wi-Fi hotspot  functionality Quick switching between multiple keyboard languages and their dictionaries Updated application and automatic update features Option to disable data access over mobile network

Feature: Adobe Flash support Voice dialling and contact sharing over Bluetoot h Support for numeric and alphanumeric passwords Support for file upload fields in the Browser application Support for installing applications to the expandable memory Gallery allows users to view picture stacks using a zoom gesture Extra-high pixels per inch (PPI) display support(320p to 720p)

Speed The best reason to upgrade to Froyo is speed. The browser is a lot faster -- which enables much quicker loading of JavaScript-heavy pages. You'll see a two to five times boost in speed because the Dalvik virtual machine has a just-in-time compiler .

Tethering Tethering might be the coolest Android 2.2 feature, but it's up to the mobile carriers to support it. Now you can use your Android mobile device as a 3G Wi-Fi hotspot. That means you can plug your laptop into your smartphone via USB and use the phone's Internet access. And, Android can support up to eight devices via Wi-Fi.

More Memory Available No longer are Android developers limited to the mobile device's available memory. Now we have the option of installing applications on external storage, such as an SD card.

Data backup The Backup Manager can store any type of data, from arbitrary data to files, and manages backup and restore operations in an atomic manner. The platform now provides a generalized backup service that applications can use to backup and restore user data .

Android 2.2 APIs Android 2.2 is a minor platform release including user features, developer features, API changes, and bug fixes. The Android 2.2 platform is available as a downloadable component for the Android SDK.

API Level The Android 2.2 platform delivers an updated version of the framework API The Android 2.2 API is assigned an integer identifier —  8  — that is stored in the system itself. This identifier, called the "API Level .
