WHAT IS ULTRASOUND

•Ultrasound is any sound beyond the limit of human hearing
•Same properties and characteristics of sound apply to ultrasound
•Sound: (n.) the passage of mechanical energy through a medium in the form of vibrations
•Hammer inside of the piano strikes the strings to create vibrations
•The strings vibrate differently to create different notes
•Faster vibrations = higher pitch
•In the piano example, the vibrating string pushes the air around it
•Air molecules bump around, spreading the sound

A composite material (also called a composition material or shortened to
composite, which is the common name) is a material made from two or
more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical
properties that, when combined, produce a material with characteristics
different from the individual components. The individual components remain
separate and distinct within the finished structure, differentiating composites
from mixtures and solid solutions

impactonstructuralintegrityandarenormallynotdetectablebyradiographyorNDTtechniquesotherthanultrasonic.
Ultrasonicflawdetectionoffersasimplemethodforlocatinginternalvoids.High-frequencysoundwavescoupledintothepartby
asmallprobecalledatransducerwillreflectfromcracksandvoidsinapredictableway.Ultrasonicwaveswilltravelthrougha
materialuntiltheyencounteraboundary,suchasafarwall,butifthereisacrackwithinthesoundpath,itwillgeneratean
additionalechowherethereshouldnotbeone.Byobservingechopatternsonadisplayscreen,atrainedoperatorcanquickly
andreliablyverifymaterialintegrity.
