Phonics

Phonics

Phonics

Task 1 –Letter formation
1.Ask your child to form each letter of
the alphabet and observe them doing
this, note down any letter formation
they struggle with.
2.Model how to form the letters
correctly. Once your child has
observed you, ask them to have a go.
Keep doing this daily until they
improve
If your child struggles, use pencil to form
the letters and ask them to trace over
them using pen.

1.Ask your child to look at the picture
and make a list of everything they
can see.
(Refer back to the sound mats if
necessary. Remember the words don’t
have to be spelt correctly, so long as
your child is using their phonetic
knowledge.)
Task 2 –Writing

Task 3 –Reading sentences
1.Ask your child to read the
sentence and then draw a
picture to represent it.
2.Remind your child to identify
any tricky words, capital
letters and full stops.
The man is sad.
Pat the dog.
She is looking at a book.
Fish and chips on a dish.

Task 4 –Writing Phase 2/3 words
1.Encourage your child to look at the
pictures on the slide and write the
words independently!

Maths
Everyday
count to 20
Count backwards from 20-0
Practise one more and one
less; for example say ‘what is
one more than 6, what is one
less then 10 etc.’

Task 1 –Addition
1.Create a similar template to the one in
the picture opposite by splitting a piece
of paper into three sections.
2.Create several simple addition sums
using numbers 1-10.
3.Ask your child to read the sum.
4.Using any small objects (buttons,
stones, small world cars etc.) ask your
child to create the sum (the number of
objects will represent the numbers).
5.Finally, ask your child to write the
answer in the third section.

Task 2 –Number bonds to 10!
1.Create a rainbow like the one on this
slide, or if you have access to a
printer follow the link:
https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/t-
n-4567-new-rainbow-to-10-activity-
sheet
2.Encourage your child to colour a part
of the rainbow, taking note of the
numbers at each end.
3.Next ask your child to write a number
sentence i.e. 0+10=10
4.Continue to do this until the rainbow
is fully coloured and your child has
written several sums.
Why not stick your colourful rainbows up
in the window for everyone else to see?

Task 3 –Subtraction
10-1=9
8-3=5
7-4=3
5-5=0
1.Create a grid like the one shown on
this slide.
2.Write several simple subtraction sums
using numbers 1-10.
3.Ask your child to read the sum.
(Support as necessary)
4.Using small objects to fill the squares,
model how to ‘take-away’ to reveal
the answer.
5.Ask your child to do this
independently.

Task 4 –Time
1.Use a clock to talk about time. What
numbers can your child see? Discuss the
hands and explain that the shorter hand
is the hour hand and the longer hand is
the minute hand. Explain that when the
minute hand is pointing to 12 we call it
“o’clock.”
2. Set a challenge to do within in 1
minute (e.g. how many star jumps can
you do). Challenge other family members
to do the activity too.
3. Ask your child to record the results.
4. Question Who did the most? How do
you know?

Task 5 –Number hunt.
1.Encourage your child to practice
number formation by writing
numbers from 1 –20 on separate
pieces of paper.
2.Ask your child to hide each number in
different areas of the house.
3.Encourage them to give you clues as
to where some of the numbers could
be. Ask them to talk about size,
colour etc. when describing the
object the numbers could be hidden
by.
4.When you only have a few numbers
left to find, ask your child to place the
found numbers onto the floor in the
correct order. Can they identify which
are missing?

Other areas of
learning
Everyday
Let you child play with their
toys throughout the day. At
school we do half an hour of
phonics, half an hour of
literacy, half an hour of maths
and story time (at different
times of the day). The
children are allowed to play
and use their imagination the
rest of the day.

Task 1 –P.E & PSHE –Cosmic Yoga
1.Why not get the whole family in front of the TV, computer or tablet and join in with yoga, mindfulness and relaxation with
Cosmic Kids?!
2.Just type ‘Cosmic Yoga’ into Youtube. There are so many videos to chose from including: Trolls, Harry Potter and Frozen!
3. There’s also a 14-day free trial which can be cancelled anytime, with access to lots more videos via the Cosmic Kids App.

Task 2 –Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Boys and Girls! It’s time to show your
grown ups just how helpful you can be!
Let's see if you can do any of the
following tasks:
1)Make your bed.
2)Tidy away your toys when you have
finished playing with them.
3)Wash the pots (supervised by an
adult).
4)Clean your bike/scooter.
5)Help with the sweeping
up/hoovering.

Task 3 –Expressive Arts and Design –Create your own instruments!
1.Using junk-modelling encourage your
child to create a musical instrument.
(You can use pictures on your
phone/tablet to support them.)
2.Cardboard boxes, tubs, pieces of
string, Sellotape, dried rice/pasta can
all be used to create guitars, shakers
and drums.
3.When complete, encourage your child
to ‘play the instrument.’ Perhaps they
could make up a song or dance and
perform a show to the family.
We’d love to see any creations uploaded
to Tapestry!

Task 4 –Physical Development -Obstacle course
1.Encourage your child to create
their own obstacle course in the
garden using any resources
available. (Buckets, chairs, plant
pots , toys etc.)
2.Ask your child to move in a range
of ways: running, jumping,
hopping, crawling etc.
3.Time how fast your child can
complete the course.
4.Compete against family
members, questioning ‘Who was
the quickest?’
5.Challenge your child to think of
ways to make the course more
difficult.
