Functional resume Presented by Amber Wajid

What is functional resume ? A functional resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history . It is typically used by job seekers who are changing careers, who have gaps in their  employment history , or whose work history is not directly related to the job. In this way,  specific skills  and capabilities are emphasized to highlight the job seeker’s capabilities.

Functional resume s allow candidates to flaunt the skills of their choice and the experience s of which they are the proudest. This format gives candidates the luxury of combining a lifelong dedication to community service into their for-profit achievements when switching career tracks Compared to chronological resume , that display relevant work experience , a functional resume focus on smoothing over gaps in your work history. If you want to apply for a job but have no work experience instead of chronologically listing your work history you'll list them by functional skills .

Functional resume is ideal… Functional resumes are ideal for people new to the workforce, have gaps in their careers, are looking to change career paths, or are applying for a job with very specific requirements and characteristics in mind.

Tips for writing functional resume…..

Tips # 01 Consider a resume summary . Consider including a resume summary  at the beginning of your resume that focuses on the skills you have that are relevant to the job. This is a great way to shape the way the employer sees you (and your resume) at first glance.

Tip #02 Organize by theme “ By grouping your skills together, the employer can more easily see that you have the right skills for the job, even if your work history is less than stellar (or less related to the job at hand).”

Tip #03 Use keywords. Be sure to use keywords from the job description in your resume. the titles for your subheadings, OR in the bulleted lists ( where you describe your skills and accomplishments in more detail. ) This will help the employer see that your abilities match well with the job requirements.

Tip #04 Mention relevant projects. Also remember to include any projects – personal or professional – that are related to the job. Projects demonstrate your success in developing and completing tasks.

Tip #05 Still include employment history. No matter what, you will likely still need to include employment history. Include this at the bottom of your resume, so that the employer will focus more on your skills rather than your work history.

Advantages… With a functional resume, you trim down any unnecessary information . stick to your most important work experiences.

Disadvantages… A disadvantage of having a functional resume is that : It will look as if you lack a steady and stable work history because of possible gaps in this type of resume. Because of this, potential employers may assume that you're a "job hopper" who lacks the discipline and commitment to stick to a certain job for a long period of time. And because some functional resumes may not reflect a certain type of work history for a specific job, this could hinder your chances of landing an interview.

Advice… Before writing your resume, compile a list of all the jobs you held and determine whether a functional or chronological resume would be the best fit for you. You may also be able to write a combination resume, which blends aspects of both the functional and chronological resume. According to CareerBuilder, a combination resume can help you if you're trying to change careers but you don't have enough experience in the new career you're choosing.
