Communication
Guide Questions: What are the people doing? What did the teacher do when the child refuse to introduce himself? How did the teacher draw the students’ attention? How did the teacher feel when he saw his students messing around the classroom?
How is communication being used in different contexts?
People use communication for different purposes.
Functions of Communication “Why do we communicate?”
1. Regulation/Control 1 A person is able to use language , behavior, emotion and gesture to manage individual; or a group in an activity. If the person’s purpose is to control others by managing their behavior. 2
2. Social Interaction It allows people to be connected with one another. A new acquaintance can become a friend by getting to know that person through more opportunities for interaction.
3. Motivation When the speaker’s purpose is to persuade another person to change his/her opinion, attitude or behavior. Communication fosters motivation by clarifying to someone what is to be done, how well he/she is doing, what can be done to improve performance if it’s subpar.
4. Emotional Expression Our emotions are communicated with verbal and non-verbal language like facial expressions, body gestures and postures. Communication provides release for the emotional expression of feelings and fulfillment of social needs.
5. Information When the speaker wants to make others aware of certain data, concepts and processes-knowledge that maybe useful to them. Information is necessary for the individual to have a harmonious relationship with the environment.
