Galvanometer A galvanometer is a sensitive instrument used to detect and measure small electric currents. It operates on the principle of electromagnetic deflection, where an electric current passing through a coil generates a magnetic field that interacts with the field of a permanent magnet, causing the coil to move. The deflection of the coil is proportional to the current flowing through it.

Components of a Galvanometer Coil : A loop or winding of fine wire through which the current flows. Magnet : A permanent magnet that provides a stable magnetic field. Pivot and Spring : The coil is mounted on a pivot and is attached to a spring, which provides a restoring force to bring the coil back to its original position when the current stops. Pointer and Scale : The motion of the coil is transmitted to a pointer that moves over a calibrated scale to indicate the current.

Types of Galvanometers Moving-Coil Galvanometer : Uses a coil suspended in a magnetic field. Moving-Magnet Galvanometer : Involves a fixed coil and a moving magnet. Ballistic Galvanometer : Designed to measure the total charge passed through it during a short time interval.

Applications Measuring Small Currents : Commonly used in experimental physics and electronics. As a Null Indicator : In Wheatstone bridges and other null measurement techniques. In Analog Meters : Forms the core component of analog ammeters and voltmeters
