Gas Laws and Mole Concept SSLC Kerala Syllabus - Chemistry

Introduction • Gas laws explain the behavior of gases in different conditions. • The mole concept relates the mass of a substance to the number of particles. • Both are fundamental in understanding chemical reactions.

Gas Laws 1. Boyle’s Law: Pressure is inversely proportional to volume (P ∝ 1/V at constant T). 2. Charles’ Law: Volume is directly proportional to temperature (V ∝ T at constant P). 3. Avogadro’s Law: Equal volumes of gases at same T & P contain equal number of molecules. 4. Ideal Gas Equation: PV = nRT.

Mole Concept • 1 mole = 6.022 × 10²³ particles (Avogadro’s number). • Molar mass = Mass of 1 mole of a substance (g/mol). • Relationship: n = given mass / molar mass. • At STP, 1 mole of gas occupies 22.4 L.

Applications in Daily Life • Breathing and respiration involve gas laws. • LPG cylinders and balloons expand with heat (Charles’ Law). • Quantitative chemical calculations use mole concept.

Summary Gas laws explain pressure, volume, and temperature relationships. The mole concept connects the macroscopic and microscopic worlds of chemistry, enabling chemical calculations.
