Gastrostomy feeding is a medical device used to provide nutrition to patients who cannot obtain nutrition by swallowing. Purpose: to restore or maintain nutritional status to administer medication Equipment's: disposable feeding bag syringe-stethoscope prescribed formula clean gloves 12/27/2024 2
Cont’d Indications gastrostomy administration included dysphagia patients and malnutrition Other indications were: necessity to increase energy intake terminal care in hospice patients and gastrostomy as a transfer from parenteral to enteral nutrition Contraindication i llness of the stomach, peculiar gastric or duodenal emptying, and important esophageal reflux. Specific complications come with native inflammation, hemorrhage, skin excoriation from leaking of gastric contents, and wound an infection. 12/27/2024 3
PROCEDURE Asses client's need for gastric tube feedings; impaired swallowing; decreased level of consciousness, head or neck surgery, facial trauma, surgeries of upper alimentary canal evaluate client's nutritional status . Obtain baseline weight and laboratory values. Assess client for fluid volume excess or deficit, electrolyte abnormalities, and metabolic abnormalities such as hyperglycemia. verify physicians order for formula, rate, route, and frequency. Finger-stick blood glucose measurement, are also ordered by the physicians 12/27/2024 4

Cont’d connect tubing to container as needed or prepare ready to hang container shake formula container well, and fill container with formula. Open stopcock on tubing and fill with formula to remove air. for intermittent feeding, have syringe ready and be sure formula at room temperature place client on semi-fowlers p osition, or elevate head of bed 30 degrees 12/27/2024 6
Cont’d Verify tube placement: consider together the results from PH testing and aspirate's appearance. Check for gastric residual draw 30ml of air with syringe. Connect to end of feeding tube. Flush tube with air. pull back evenly to aspirate gastric content return aspirated contents to stomach unless the volume exceeds 100ml flush tubing's with 30ml of water initiate feeding 12/27/2024 7
Cont’d advance tube feeding gradually following intermittent infusion or at end of continuous infusion, flush nasogastric tubing with 30ml of water when tube feeding are not being administered, cap or clamp the proximal end of the feeding tube remove gloves or perform hand hygiene do after care and document all relevant information 12/27/2024 8
