HANDWASHING? Handwashing helps prevent spread of infectious diseases. Universal precautions. A ct of cleaning one’s hands with the use of any liquid with or without soap for the purpose of removing dirt or microorganisms. It is the most effective measure in reducing the risk of transmitting infectious diseases.
PURPOSE? The purposes of hand hygiene are: Hand washing can prevent infection Avoid pathogenic microorganisms and to avoid transmitting them
INDICATORS? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there are Five Moments : Before Patient Contact. Before and Antiseptic Task. After Body Fluid Exposure Risk. After Patient Contact. After Contact with Patient Surroundings.
How long you should wash your hand? According to the standard WHO hand-washing guidelines, the duration of the entire hand washing procedure is 40-60 seconds while that of the entire hand rub procedure (with hand sanitizer) is 20-30 seconds.

Can you use hand sanitizer instead of soap? Hand sanitizers that contain more than 60 percent alcohol are effective at removing some harmful bacteria from your skin. However, they don’t help dissolve dirt and oils from your hands, and they won’t be as good at eliminating bacteria as washing your hands properly.

Performance Checklist for Medical Handwashing : Procedures/ Steps 1. Stand in front of the sink. Do not allow your uniform to touch the sink during the washing procedure. 2. Remove your jewelry (a plain wedding band does not have to be removed). 3. Turn on water and adjust force. 4. Wet the hands and wrist area. Keep hands lower than elbow to allow water to flow toward fingertips.
Performance Checklist for Medical Handwashing : 5. Use about 1 tsp. liquid soap from dispenser or lather thoroughly with bar soap. Rinse bar and return to soap dish. 6. With firm rubbing and circular motions, wash the palms and back of the hands, spaces between fingers; each thumb, the rub back of the fingers with finger interlocked, tips of the fingernails in rotational motion, wrist, and forearms. Wash up the forearms at least as high as contamination is likely to be present.
Performance Checklist for Medical Handwashing : (Following the steps in Handwashing) 7. Continue this friction motion for 10 to 30 seconds. 8. Rinse thoroughly in a running water. Visually inspect for remaining dirt or soap. 9. Dry hands and wrist with towel. 10. Turns off faucet with paper towel. 11. Use lotion on hands, if desired.
Performance Checklist for Medical Handwashing : Using Alcohol-Based Hand scrub 12. If hands are soiled, washes them with soap and water. 13. Applies a sufficient quantity of antiseptic solution to cover the hands and wrists. 14. Rubs solution on all surfaces of fingers and hands using the steps. 15. Continues rubbing until hands are dry. 16. Maintains body mechanics throughout the performance of the procedures. 17. Manifest neatness in the performed procedure. 18. Receptive to criticism. 19. Observes courtesy. 20. Shows calmness while performing the procedure. 21. Uses correct English. 22. Shows mastery of the procedure.
