What is ar t appreciation? Art appreciation 2 Expression of admiration, approval or gratitude. Recognition of the good qualities and understanding of art. Acquiring knowledge leads to appreciation. Knowing vocabulary, concepts, themes, processes and materials. Knowledge and understanding of the universal and timeless qualities that identify all great art.

WHAT IS ART? Art is something perennially around us. The word “art” comes from the ancient Latin, ars which means a “ craft ” or specialized form of skill. The Ancient World did not have any conceived notion of art in the same way that we do now. To them, art only meant using the bare hands to produce something that will be useful to one’s day-to-day life. Ars in Medieval Latin came to mean something different . Means “any special form of book-learning, such as grammar or logic, magic or astrology” (Collingwood, 1938). Art appreciation 3

Art appreciation 4 During the Renaissance Period , the word reacquired a meaning that was inherent in its ancient form of craft. The Early Renaissance artists saw their activities merely as craftsmanship. During the seventeenth century when the problem and the idea of aesthetics, the study of beauty began to unfold from the notion of technical workmanship, which was the original conception of the word “ art ”. In the eighteenth century , when the word has evolved to distinguish between the fine arts and the useful arts . Fine arts any form of visual art cannot be used for commercial or practical purposes. Typically include mediums such as painting, drawing, and sculpture. Useful arts/applied arts artwork created for a valuable end product such as design or decoration.

Why study the humanities? Art appreciation 5 Humanities are the records of man’s experiences, his values, his sentiments, his ideals and his goals. The humanities are ultimately the expression of man’s feelings and thoughts.

Vincent van gogh Art appreciation 6 Starry Night Inspired by the view from his window at the Saint-Paul-de- Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where the artist spent twelve months in 1889–90 seeking reprieve from his mental illnesses, The Starry Night (made in mid-June) is both an exercise in observation and a clear departure from it.

ASSUMPTION OF ART Art is universal. In every country and in every generation , there is always art. “…art is not good because it is old but old because its good” Art is not nature. Art is man’s expression of his reception of nature. Art is man’s way of interpreting nature.

Art appreciation 9 Art involves experience. Art is just experience. In order to know what an artwork is, we have to sense it, see or hear it.

Art appreciation 10 Art is expensive. misconceptionS OF art If it cheap, it low quality art. It’s only for the highly educated people to appreciate I can also buy cheap art from places, why do I need to pay so much for something else? This artwork is so simple, I can also do it!

LET’S WRAP IT! WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS? Do you think arts has an important place in today’s education system? Art appreciation 11 Humanities and the art have always been part of man’s growth and civilization. The three assumptions or art are its universality, art is not nature and involves experience. Art is present in every part of the globe and its called universality. Art is not being nature, art is always a creation of the artist, not nature. Without experience, there is no art. The artist has to be foremost, a perceiver who is directly in touch with art.
