Lesson: General Statements and Specific Statements
Lesson Objectives: At end of this lesson, the students are expected to: a. identify general and specific statement; b. distinguish between general and specific statements; and c. appreciate the importance of identifying general and specific statement
Identify Me! Give the general statement and 2 specific statement The color of a metal changes when its temperature change At higher temperatures, it becomes yellow and finally white. When the wire inside becomes yellow-hot, the light bulb glows, or gives light. The sun shines brightly.
Identify Me! Maintaining space between yourself and others is a best practice and is one of the best tools to avoid exposure to the COVID-19 virus. People can spread the virus without being sick or knowing they are sick, so it is important to maintain social distance from others whenever possible. Physical distancing is required on USM's main campus and in satellite locations to limit exposure to the COVID-19 virus and slow its spread. The non-biodegradable plastic we use reach water systems and choke up marine life.
How does the general statement differ from the evidence? _________________________________________________ Which presents the overall message of the paragraph? _________________________________________________ What do you think is the purpose for the details or evidence?
How are general statements different from supporting details? Distinguishing between the two helps you arrive at the main message of a text. It also enables you to cite specific details that the writer used to support the main idea. More importantly, your ability to distinguish between the two concepts helps you to analyze whether the supporting details are indeed valid and enough to support the main idea presented in the reading selection.
What is General Statement ? is a main idea that is supported by specific statements or details. The main idea can be identified by asking: "What key point does the author want me to know about the topic?" We can identify the general statement or idea by asking: "Who is this all about?, "What is this all about?" It is usually the topic sentence or the main idea of the paragraph. It is normally vague and represents a broad description of something.
Example: General Statement Maintaining space between yourself and others is a best practice and is one of the best tools to avoid exposure to the COVID-19 virus. People can spread the virus without being sick or knowing they are sick, so it is important to maintain social distance from others whenever possible. Physical distancing is required on USM's main campus and in satellite locations to limit exposure to the COVID-19 virus and slow its spread.
What is Supporting Statement? are the details or small ideas that reinforce the main idea or general statement . Supporting details are specific information such as facts, examples, reasons, facts or statistics that elaborate or explain about the general statement or main idea. Specific statement answers the who, what, where, when and why about the topic. it refers to the exact, precise fact or description of something mentioned in the text.
Example: Specific Statement The color of a metal changes when its temperature change. At higher temperatures, it becomes yellow and finally white. When the wire inside becomes yellow-hot, the light bulb glows, or gives light.
Example: Mario Andretti is a successful Racer-car driver. - General statement On Labor Day in 1963, Mario Andretti won seven midget races. - three in the afternoon at Flemington, New Jersey, and four at night in Hatfield, Pennsylvania. - Specific statement.
1. What is general statement? 2. What is specific statement?
Try it! The cats’ behavior of cleaning their body with their tongue serves several purposes: It helps cats to tone down their scent so they can avoid predators, it cools them down, it promotes blood flow, and it distributes natural oils evenly around their coat, allowing them to stay warm and dry. Grooming also serves as a sign of affection between two cats, and it’s thought that saliva contains enzymes that serve as a natural antibiotic for wounds. General statement: ______________________________________________ Specific statement/s: ______________________________________________
Identify the General and Specific statement! Sun exposure is linked to skin cancer. This is the most common type of cancer in the world. It’s best to limit your time spent in the sun. Be sure to wear protective clothing and hats when you are outside. Use sunscreen year-round on exposed skin, like your face and hands. It protects your skin and helps prevent skin cancer. Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. It should be at least an SPF 15. Do not sunbathe or use tanning booths. General statement: _____________________________________________ Specific statement/s: _____________________________________________
Evaluation: Directions : Read the paragraph carefully. Then, identify the General and Specific statements using the given graphic organizer. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Leslie’s favorite spot is his bed. It’s a cozy queen-sized bed, which can be folded into a couch (though so far there has never been an occasion which required the bed to be folded), layered with soft, warm quilts and piled with numerous pillows in different sizes and colors. Leslie spends the entire day sprawled on the bed. His eyes glued to the huge smart plasma TV mounted on the wall of his bedroom. Leslie’s grandparents can never understand why it’s called the “smart” TV.
Assignment: Directions: Construct 5-sentenced paragraph containing a general statement that you like and specific statement to support the topic.
