GERMAN NUMBERS FROM 21-40 HOLY COW! THAT’S A LOT OF NUMBERS!

FORMING GERMAN NUMBERS The best way to learn how to count above 20 in German is to first learn how to count by tens.

COUNTING BY 10’S In English, we say “ten,” “twenty,” “thirty, “forty” and so on This is what the tens look like in German: 10 = zehn (you know this one already) 20 = zwanzig 30 = drei β ig 40 = vierzig

COUNTING BY 10’S, con’t . Click on the speaker to hear how to count to 40 by tens: 10 = zehn 20 = zwanzig 30 = drei β ig 40 = vierzig

…and everything in between Once you can count by tens, it’s easy to learn all of the numbers in between. In English we say “twenty-one;” in German we say “ einundzwanzig ,” which means “one and twenty” spelled as one word. Here are the other numbers in the 20s. Notice that all of the numbers are formed by saying the second digit first (from 1-9) and then adding “ undzwanzig .” This is what it looks like. Click on the speaker to hear them spoken: 20 = zwanzig 25 = fünfundzwanzig 21 = einundzwanzig 26 = sechsundzwanzig 22 = zweiundzwanzig 27 = siebenundzwanzig 23 = dreiundzwanzig 28 = achtundzwanzig 24 = vierundzwanzig 29 = neunundzwanzig

THE THIRTIES So now that you know how to say and spell the twenties, it’s easy to figure out the thirties: 30 = drei β ig 35 = fünfunddrei β ig 31 = einunddrei β ig 36 = sechsunddrei β ig 32 = zweiunddrei β ig 37 = siebenunddrei β ig 33 = dreiunddrei β ig 38 = achtunddrei β ig 34 = vierunddrei β ig 39 = neununddrei β ig

(VERY) SIMPLE MATH This is also a good time to learn three simple math words in German: “plus,” “minus” and “equals.” Click on the speaker to hear them pronounced: plus = und minus = weniger equals = ist

ADDING Look at the way we say an addition equation in both English and German: English: four plus five equals nine 4 + 5 = 9 German: vier und fünf ist neun (this translates into “four and five is nine”) Simple, right?

SUBTRACTING Saying a subtraction equation is just as easy as saying an addition equation: English: “nine minus five equals four” 9 – 5 = 4 German: “ neun weniger fünf ist vier ”

PRACTICE Please see your teacher now for a copy of the practice guide that covers the numbers from 0-40. Complete as much of the guide as you can today. If you need more time you may finish it tomorrow.
