What is Gestalt Psychology? 4

What is Gestalt Psychology? Gestalt psychology is a  school of thought  that looks at the human mind and behavior as a whole. When trying to make sense of the world around us, Gestalt psychology suggests that we do not simply focus on every small component. Instead, our minds tend to perceive objects as elements of more complex systems. 5

What is Gestalt Psychology? A core belief in Gestalt psychology is  holism , or that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. This school of psychology has played a major role in the modern development of the study of human sensation and  perception . 6

Gestalt

Gestalt is a German word that roughly means "configuration" or the way things are put together to “form” a whole object.

Gestalt Theory

Gestalt Theory was the initial cognitive response to behaviorism. It emphasized the importance of sensory wholes and the dynamic nature of visual perception.

This psychologists studied perception and concluded that perceivers (or learners) are not passive, but rather active. They suggested that learners do not just collect information but they actively process and restructures data in order to understand it.

Insight Learning Theory Wolfgang Kohler 1887-1967 Insight learning is  the sudden understanding of the relation between a problem and a solution . By learning through insight, the correct solution not only appears seemingly out of nowhere but also repeated readily of subsequent presentations of that problem.

Gestalt Principles and the Teaching-Learning Process Six (6) Gestalt Principles not only influence perception but they also impact inlearning .-Kurt Lewin His theory is focusing on “life space” adhered to gestalt psychology. He said that individual has two forces that affect his perception as well as his learning.

Gestalt Principles and the Teaching-Learning Process Inner Forces (motivation, attitudes and feelings). Outer Forces (attitude and behaviour ) All these forces interact and impact on the person’s learning.

Relevance of Gestalt Psychology to Education Gestalt theory is focused on the experience of contact that occurs in the here and now learning. It considers with interest the life space of teachers as well as students. It takes interest in the complexity of experience, without neglecting anything, but accepting and amplifying all that emerges. It stimulates learning as experience and the experience as a source of learning. It appreciates the affections and the meaning that we attribute to what we learn.

Relevance of Gestalt Psychology to Education Knowledge is conceived as a continuous organization and rearrangement of information according to needs, purposes and meanings. It asserts that learning is not accumulation but remodeling or insight. Autonomy and freedom of the student is stimulated by the teacher. The time necessary for assimilation and for cognitive and existential remodeling is respected. The contact experience between teachers and students is given value: an authentic meeting based on sharing ideas and affections.
