GLOBALIZATION AND CHANGING VALUES

INTRODUCTION TO GLOBALIZATION Globalization  is the word used to describe the growing interdependence of the world’s economies, cultures, and populations, brought about by cross-border trade in goods and services, technology, and flows of investment, people, and information. Countries have built economic partnerships to facilitate these movements over many centuries.

Globalization means the speedup of movements and exchanges (of human beings, goods, and services, capital, technologies or cultural practices) all over the planet. One of the effects of globalization is that it promotes and increases interactions between different regions and populations around the globe. Globalization is the term used to describe the general connection we have around the world. This interconnection among countries result in the expansion of social, cultural, economic and political activities internationally and people gain not just exported goods and ideas but knowledge, experiences and associations as well. Globalization eliminates the barriers to the exchange of trades, communication, and culture. It is said that with the realization and existence of the idea in interdependency, nations will have the potential of both positive and negative impacts of several aspects including development and health. INTRODUCTION TO GLOBALIZATION

The History of Globalization The history of globalization traces back as early as the Greek culture wherein it spread across Southwestern Asia, Northern Africa and Southern Europe because of the conqueror Alexander the Great. Also recalling the well-known Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean Sea, where the exchange of ideas and information as well as the trade products and food like silk, spices and porcelain to name a few – all coming from the East. Globalization grew during the overseas colonization of Europeans. With many of them, explorers to be exact, eager to spread the Christian religion to every region they visited, missionaries who worked with local populations made it possible to stretch Christianity to Latin America.

Globalization in the philippines In the Philippine culture, the effects of globalization are immense and diverse. The most apparent effect lies in our language wherein using English in professional communications is essential in being competitive globally. However, it made the Filipino language undervalued and detrimental. Today, any Filipino can be seen as someone better than others if one’s English communication skills is better. Philippine tradition further decreased due to a colonial mentality wherein western practices are more favored. The inclination to technology and western culture of entertainment, Philippine traditional activities are becoming a distant memory. On a brighter note, Philippines has its own representatives of successful individuals that gained international acclamation whether it be in business, music and entertainment, innovation and competitions. Without globalization, these people wouldn’t be able to gain success internationally.

Globalization in the philippines Philippines is having a fair share of the positive and negative impacts of globalization like any other country. In our culture, globalization raised the standards of the country. It improved our way of living and created a drive for us to strive and be known globally in order to gain more benefits – since globalization unfortunately, has somehow become a competition amongst rich and poor countries. On the other hand, in the process of technological advancement as well, we’ve lost quite the tradition already with the preservation slowly losing against the capitalists. Not only tradition but ideology, practices and beliefs as well are slipping away together with the older generations. These Capitalists uses Media Conglomerates to disseminate ideas and produce what is called a “False Consciousness” to the mass which amplifies only the dominant modern culture impacted by western civilization. Therefore, making Filipinos as consumers of cultures wherein we buy goods and products produced by multinational corporations that had been promoting a type of consumer culture amongst Filipinos. Thus, making us lose touch our own cultural identity and loving what isn’t our own.
