Why does sexuality matters?

What is
Gender?
This refers to physical or physiological differences
between males and females, including both
primary sex characteristics (the reproductive
system) and secondary characteristics such as
height and muscularity.

Other things you should know
about Gender
Gender is both an analytical category – a way of thinking about
how identities are constructed – and a political idea which
addresses the distribution of power in society.
Gender norms are learned and internalized by all members of
society.
Gender norms vary across different cultures and over time.
Traditional gender norms are hierarchical: they presuppose an
unequal power structure related to gender that disadvantages
mostly women.

Examples of Gender
Characteristics
In most countries, women earn
significantly less than men.
In most countries of the world, women do
more housework than men.
In some countries, the law allows people
to marry a partner of the same sex; in
other countries this is not allowed.

What is
Sexuality?
A person’s sexuality, or sexual orientation,
determines whom they do or do not feel attraction
toward. This attraction is typically sexual or
romantic.
Sexual attraction describes a person’s desire to
have sex or form a sexual relationship with other
people. It often also describes physical attraction
toward others or a lack of it.

Different Types of
Sexuality
Heterosexual
Homosexual
Bisexual
Asexual
Alloromantic
Allosexual
Pansexual
Lesbian
Gay
Monosexual
Queer

Different Types of Sexuality
Heterosexual
People who are
heterosexual are
romantically and
physically attracted
to members of the
opposite sex.
Homosexual
People who are
homosexual are
romantically and
physically attracted
to members of the
same sex.

Different Types of Sexuality
Bisexual
People who are
bisexual are
romantically and
physically
attracted to both
men and women.
Asexual
People who are
asexual have little
to no sexual
attraction to
people.

Different Types of Sexuality
Alloromantic
People who identify
as alloromantic
experience romantic
attraction toward
others.
Allosexual
People who are allosexual
are those that experience
sexual attraction to
others. Allosexual people
might identify as gay,
lesbian, bisexual,
pansexual, or of another
sexual orientation.

Different Types of Sexuality
Pansexual
A term that describes
people who can
experience sexual,
romantic, or emotional
attraction to any person,
regardless of that
person’s gender, sex, or
sexuality.
Lesbian
A woman or female-identified
person who experiences sexual,
romantic, or emotional
attraction to people of the
same or a similar gender.
However, it’s important to note
that not all lesbians are female-
identified; some define their
identity as more nonmale or
femme than female or feminine.

Different Types of Sexuality
Gay
A person who identifies as gay
typically only feels sexual
attraction toward people of the
same gender. Socially, people
use this term to refer to men who
are romantically and sexually
attracted to men. However, those
in the community use it as an
umbrella term.
Monosexual
Monosexual is an
umbrella term
encompassing all sexual
orientations that feel a
romantic or sexual
attraction toward only
one gender.

Different Types of Sexuality
Queer
People of all sexualities under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella may
also identify as queer.
Historically, many people used the word queer as a slur.
People belonging to LGBTQIA+ communities may now
choose to use this term to reclaim it.
It is generally not a good idea for people outside of these
communities to use this term.

Examples of Sexuality
Characteristics
Women can menstruate while men cannot.
Men have testicles while women do not.
Women have developed breast that are usually capable of lactating
(producing milk) while men have not.
Men generally have bigger bones than women.

Why does
Sexuality matter?
A person’s sexuality determines who they feel
romantic or sexual attraction toward. People may
feel that labeling their sexuality helps them deal
with any oppression or difficulties they face. It may
also help them find a community in which they can
share their experiences.
People may also find it helpful to know the terms
describing other sexual orientations. By knowing the
terminology, people can better understand another
person’s sexuality.

Summary
Both gender identity and sexual orientation are
crucial to a person's identity.
Social constructs surrounding gender and sexuality
often lead to prejudices, negatively impacting
gender-diverse and sexual minority individuals.
It's crucial to recognize that gender and sexuality are
not inherently linked.
Assumptions about sexual orientation should not be
based on gender.
Individuals should explore and define their gender
identity and sexual orientation as they feel best.

Let's not forget
why and how Pride
Month began.
Together, let's continue creating safe spaces
for the LGBTQIA+ community.
